Alif Laam Ra.
تِلْكَtil'ka
These
ءَايَاتُāyātu
(are the) Verses
الْكِتَابِl-kitābi
(of) the Book
الْمُبِينِl-mubīni
[the] clear.
Alif Lam Ra These are the verses of the Scripture that makes things clear––

إِنَّاinnā
Indeed, We,
أَنْزَلْنَاهُanzalnāhu
We have sent it down,
قُرْءَانًاqur'ānan
(as) a Quran in Arabic
عَرَبِيًّاʿarabiyyan
(as) a Quran in Arabic
لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakum
so that you may
تَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūna
understand.
We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran so that you [people] may understand.

نَحْنُnaḥnu
We
نَقُصُّnaquṣṣu
relate
عَلَيْكَʿalayka
to you
أَحْسَنَaḥsana
the best
الْقَصَصِl-qaṣaṣi
of the narrations
بِمَاbimā
in what
أَوْحَيْنَاawḥaynā
We have revealed
إِلَيْكَilayka
to you
هَذَاhādhā
(of) this
الْقُرْءَانَl-qur'āna
the Quran,
وَإِنْwa-in
although
كُنْتَkunta
you were,
مِنْmin
before it,
قَبْلِهِqablihi
before it,
لَمِنَlamina
surely among
الْغَافِلِينَl-ghāfilīna
the unaware.
We tell you [Prophet] the best of stories in revealing this Quran to you. Before this you were one of those who knew nothing about them.

إِذْidh
When
قَالَqāla
said
يُوسُفُyūsufu
Yusuf
لِأَبِيهِli-abīhi
to his father,
يَاأَبَتِyāabati
"O my father!
إِنِّيinnī
Indeed, I
رَأَيْتُra-aytu
I saw
أَحَدَaḥada
eleven
عَشَرَʿashara
eleven
كَوْكَبًاkawkaban
star(s)
وَالشَّمْسَwal-shamsa
and the sun
وَالْقَمَرَwal-qamara
and the moon;
رَأَيْتُهُمْra-aytuhum
I saw them
لِيlī
to me
سَاجِدِينَsājidīna
prostrating."
Joseph said to his father, ‘Father, I dreamed of eleven stars and the sun and the moon: I saw them all bow down before me,’

قَالَqāla
He said,
يَابُنَيَّyābunayya
"O my son!
لَاlā
(Do) not
تَقْصُصْtaqṣuṣ
relate
رُءْيَاكَru'yāka
your vision
عَلَىʿalā
to
إِخْوَتِكَikh'watika
your brothers
فَيَكِيدُواfayakīdū
lest they plan
لَكَlaka
against you
كَيْدًاkaydan
a plot.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
الشَّيْطَانَl-shayṭāna
the Shaitaan
لِلْإِنْسَانِlil'insāni
(is) to man
عَدُوٌّʿaduwwun
an enemy
مُبِينٌmubīnun
open.
and he replied, ‘My son, tell your brothers nothing of this dream, or they may plot to harm you––Satan is man’s sworn enemy.

وَكَذَلِكَwakadhālika
And thus
يَجْتَبِيكَyajtabīka
will choose you
رَبُّكَrabbuka
your Lord
وَيُعَلِّمُكَwayuʿallimuka
and will teach you
مِنْmin
of
تَأْوِيلِtawīli
(the) interpretation
الْأَحَادِيثِl-aḥādīthi
(of) the narratives
وَيُتِمُّwayutimmu
and complete
نِعْمَتَهُniʿ'matahu
His Favor
عَلَيْكَʿalayka
on you
وَعَلَىwaʿalā
and on
ءَالِāli
(the) family
يَعْقُوبَyaʿqūba
(of) Yaqub
كَمَاkamā
as
أَتَمَّهَاatammahā
He completed it
عَلَىʿalā
on
أَبَوَيْكَabawayka
your two forefathers
مِنْmin
before -
قَبْلُqablu
before -
إِبْرَاهِيمَib'rāhīma
Ibrahim
وَإِسْحَاقَwa-is'ḥāqa
and Ishaq.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
رَبَّكَrabbaka
your Lord
عَلِيمٌʿalīmun
(is) All-Knower,
حَكِيمٌḥakīmun
All-Wise."
This is about how your Lord will choose you, teach you to interpret dreams, and perfect His blessing on you and the House of Jacob, just as He perfected it earlier on your forefathers Abraham and Isaac: your Lord is all knowing and wise.’

لَقَدْlaqad
Certainly
كَانَkāna
were
فِيfī
in
يُوسُفَyūsufa
Yusuf
وَإِخْوَتِهِwa-ikh'watihi
and his brothers
ءَايَاتٌāyātun
signs
لِلسَّائِلِينَlilssāilīna
for those who ask.
There are lessons in the story of Joseph and his brothers for all who seek them.
8
إِذْidh
When
قَالُواqālū
they said,
لَيُوسُفُlayūsufu
"Surely Yusuf
وَأَخُوهُwa-akhūhu
and his brother
أَحَبُّaḥabbu
(are) more beloved
إِلَىilā
to
أَبِينَاabīnā
our father
مِنَّاminnā
than we,
وَنَحْنُwanaḥnu
while we
عُصْبَةٌʿuṣ'batun
(are) a group.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
أَبَانَاabānā
our father
لَفِيlafī
(is) surely in
ضَلَالٍḍalālin
an error
مُبِينٍmubīnin
clear.
The brothers said [to each other], ‘Although we are many, Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we are–– our father is clearly in the wrong.’

اقْتُلُواuq'tulū
Kill
يُوسُفَyūsufa
Yusuf
أَوِawi
or
اطْرَحُوهُiṭ'raḥūhu
cast him
أَرْضًاarḍan
(to) a land
يَخْلُyakhlu
so will be free
لَكُمْlakum
for you
وَجْهُwajhu
(the) face
أَبِيكُمْabīkum
(of) your father,
وَتَكُونُواwatakūnū
and you will be
مِنْmin
after that
بَعْدِهِbaʿdihi
after that
قَوْمًاqawman
a people
صَالِحِينَṣāliḥīna
righteous."
[One of them said], ‘Kill Joseph or banish him to another land, and your father’s attention will be free to turn to you. After that you can be righteous.’

قَالَqāla
Said
قَائِلٌqāilun
a speaker
مِنْهُمْmin'hum
among them,
لَاlā
"(Do) not
تَقْتُلُواtaqtulū
kill
يُوسُفَyūsufa
Yusuf
وَأَلْقُوهُwa-alqūhu
but throw
فِيfī
in
غَيَبَتِghayābati
the bottom
الْجُبِّl-jubi
(of) the well,
يَلْتَقِطْهُyaltaqiṭ'hu
will pick him
بَعْضُbaʿḍu
some
السَّيَّارَةِl-sayārati
[the] caravan
إِنْin
if
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you are
فَاعِلِينَfāʿilīna
doing."
[Another of them] said, ‘Do not kill Joseph, but, if you must, throw him into the hidden depths of a well where some caravan may pick him up.’
