الرalif-lam-ra
Alif Laam Ra.
تِلْكَtil'ka
These
ءَايَاتُāyātu
(are) the Verses
الْكِتَابِl-kitābi
(of) the Book
وَقُرْءَانٍwaqur'ānin
and Quran
مُبِينٍmubīnin
clear.
Alif Lam Ra These are the verses of the Scripture, a Quran that makes things clear.

رُبَمَاrubamā
Perhaps
يَوَدُّyawaddu
will wish
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
كَفَرُواkafarū
disbelieved,
لَوْlaw
if
كَانُواkānū
they had been
مُسْلِمِينَmus'limīna
Muslims.
The disbelievers may well come to wish they had submitted to God,

ذَرْهُمْdharhum
Leave them
يَأْكُلُواyakulū
(to) eat
وَيَتَمَتَّعُواwayatamattaʿū
and enjoy
وَيُلْهِهِمُwayul'hihimu
and diverted them
الْأَمَلُl-amalu
the hope,
فَسَوْفَfasawfa
then soon
يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna
they will come to know.
so [Prophet] leave them to eat and enjoy themselves. Let [false] hopes distract them: they will come to know.

وَمَاwamā
And not
أَهْلَكْنَاahlaknā
We destroyed
مِنْmin
any
قَرْيَةٍqaryatin
town
إِلَّاillā
but
وَلَهَاwalahā
(there was) for it
كِتَابٌkitābun
a decree
مَعْلُومٌmaʿlūmun
known.
Never have We destroyed a community that did not have a set time;

مَاmā
Not
تَسْبِقُtasbiqu
(can) advance
مِنْmin
any
أُمَّةٍummatin
nation
أَجَلَهَاajalahā
its term
وَمَاwamā
and not
يَسْتَءْخِرُونَyastakhirūna
(can) delay it.
no community can bring its time forward, nor delay it.

وَقَالُواwaqālū
And they say,
يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
"O you
الَّذِيalladhī
(to) whom
نُزِّلَnuzzila
has been sent down
عَلَيْهِʿalayhi
[on him]
الذِّكْرُl-dhik'ru
the Reminder,
إِنَّكَinnaka
indeed, you
لَمَجْنُونٌlamajnūnun
(are) surely mad.
They say, ‘Receiver of this Quran! You are definitely mad.

لَوْlaw
Why
مَاmā
not
تَأْتِينَاtatīnā
you bring to us
بِالْمَلَائِكَةِbil-malāikati
the Angels,
إِنْin
if
كُنْتَkunta
you are
مِنَmina
of
الصَّادِقِينَl-ṣādiqīna
the truthful?"
Why do you not bring us the angels, if you are telling the truth?’

مَاmā
Not
نُنَزِّلُnunazzilu
We send down
الْمَلَائِكَةَl-malāikata
the Angels
إِلَّاillā
except
بِالْحَقِّbil-ḥaqi
with the truth;
وَمَاwamā
and not
كَانُواkānū
they would be
إِذًاidhan
then
مُنْظَرِينَmunẓarīna
given respite.
But We send down the angels only to bring justice and then these people will not be reprieved.
9
إِنَّاinnā
Indeed, We
نَحْنُnaḥnu
We
نَزَّلْنَاnazzalnā
have sent down
الذِّكْرَl-dhik'ra
the Reminder,
وَإِنَّاwa-innā
and indeed, We
لَهُlahu
of it
لَحَافِظُونَlaḥāfiẓūna
(are) surely Guardians.
We have sent down the Quran Ourself, and We Ourself will guard it. Even before you [Prophet],

وَلَقَدْwalaqad
And certainly
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnā
We (had) sent
مِنْmin
before you
قَبْلِكَqablika
before you
فِيfī
in
شِيَعِshiyaʿi
the sects
الْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna
(of) the former (people).
We sent messengers among the various communities of old,
