سُبْحَانَsub'ḥāna
Exalted
الَّذِيalladhī
(is) the One Who
أَسْرَىasrā
took
بِعَبْدِهِbiʿabdihi
His servant
لَيْلًاlaylan
(by) night
مِنَmina
from
الْمَسْجِدِl-masjidi
Al-Masjid Al-Haraam,
الْحَرَامِl-ḥarāmi
Al-Masjid Al-Haraam,
إِلَىilā
to
الْمَسْجِدِl-masjidi
Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa
الْأَقْصَاl-aqṣā
Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa
الَّذِيalladhī
which
بَارَكْنَاbāraknā
We blessed
حَوْلَهُḥawlahu
its surroundings,
لِنُرِيَهُlinuriyahu
that We may show
مِنْmin
of
ءَايَاتِنَاāyātinā
Our Signs.
إِنَّهُinnahu
Indeed He,
هُوَhuwa
He
السَّمِيعُl-samīʿu
(is) the All-Hearer,
الْبَصِيرُl-baṣīru
the All-Seer.
Glory to Him who made His servant travel by night from the sacred place of worship to the furthest place of worship, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs: He alone is the All Hearing, the All Seeing.

وَءَاتَيْنَاwaātaynā
And We gave
مُوسَىmūsā
Musa
الْكِتَابَl-kitāba
the Book,
وَجَعَلْنَاهُwajaʿalnāhu
and made it
هُدًىhudan
a guidance
لِبَنِيlibanī
for the Children
إِسْرَاءِيلَis'rāīla
(of) Israel,
أَلَّاallā
"That not
تَتَّخِذُواtattakhidhū
you take
مِنْmin
other than Me
دُونِيdūnī
other than Me
وَكِيلًاwakīlan
(as) a Disposer of affairs."
We also gave Moses the Scripture, and made it a guide for the Children of Israel. ‘Entrust yourselves to no one but Me,
3
ذُرِّيَّةَdhurriyyata
Offsprings
مَنْman
(of one) who
حَمَلْنَاḥamalnā
We carried
مَعَmaʿa
with
نُوحٍnūḥin
Nuh.
إِنَّهُinnahu
Indeed, he
كَانَkāna
was
عَبْدًاʿabdan
a servant
شَكُورًاshakūran
grateful.
you descendants of those We carried with Noah: he was truly a thankful servant.’
4
وَقَضَيْنَاwaqaḍaynā
And We decreed
إِلَىilā
for
بَنِيbanī
(the) Children
إِسْرَاءِيلَis'rāīla
(of) Israel
فِيfī
in
الْكِتَابِl-kitābi
the Book,
لَتُفْسِدُنَّlatuf'sidunna
"Surely you will cause corruption
فِيfī
in
الْأَرْضِl-arḍi
the earth
مَرَّتَيْنِmarratayni
twice,
وَلَتَعْلُنَّwalataʿlunna
and surely you will reach,
عُلُوًّاʿuluwwan
haughtiness
كَبِيرًاkabīran
great."
We declared to the Children of Israel in the Scripture, ‘Twice you will spread corruption in the land and become highly arrogant.’

فَإِذَاfa-idhā
So when
جَاءَjāa
came
وَعْدُwaʿdu
(the) promise
أُولَاهُمَاūlāhumā
(for) the first of the two,
بَعَثْنَاbaʿathnā
We raised
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
against you
عِبَادًاʿibādan
servants
لَنَاlanā
of Ours
أُولِيulī
those of great military might
بَأْسٍbasin
those of great military might
شَدِيدٍshadīdin
those of great military might
فَجَاسُواfajāsū
and they entered
خِلَالَkhilāla
the inner most part
الدِّيَارِl-diyāri
(of) the homes,
وَكَانَwakāna
and (it) was
وَعْدًاwaʿdan
a promise
مَفْعُولًاmafʿūlan
fulfilled.
When the first of these warnings was fulfilled, We sent against you servants of Ours with great force, and they ravaged your homes. That warning was fulfilled,
6
ثُمَّthumma
Then
رَدَدْنَاradadnā
We gave back
لَكُمُlakumu
to you
الْكَرَّةَl-karata
the return victory
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim
over them.
وَأَمْدَدْنَاكُمْwa-amdadnākum
And We reinforced you
بِأَمْوَالٍbi-amwālin
with the wealth
وَبَنِينَwabanīna
and sons
وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْwajaʿalnākum
and made you
أَكْثَرَakthara
more
نَفِيرًاnafīran
numerous.
but then We allowed you to prevail against your enemy. We increased your wealth and offspring and made you more numerous––
7
إِنْin
If
أَحْسَنْتُمْaḥsantum
you do good,
أَحْسَنْتُمْaḥsantum
you do good
لِأَنْفُسِكُمْli-anfusikum
for yourselves;
وَإِنْwa-in
and if
أَسَأْتُمْasatum
you do evil,
فَلَهَاfalahā
then it is for it.
فَإِذَاfa-idhā
So when
جَاءَjāa
came
وَعْدُwaʿdu
promise
الْءَاخِرَةِl-ākhirati
the last,
لِيَسُوءُواliyasūū
to sadden
وُجُوهَكُمْwujūhakum
your faces
وَلِيَدْخُلُواwaliyadkhulū
and to enter
الْمَسْجِدَl-masjida
the Masjid
كَمَاkamā
just as
دَخَلُوهُdakhalūhu
they (had) entered it
أَوَّلَawwala
first
مَرَّةٍmarratin
time,
وَلِيُتَبِّرُواwaliyutabbirū
and to destroy
مَاmā
what
عَلَوْاʿalaw
they had conquered
تَتْبِيرًاtatbīran
(with) destruction.
whether you do good or evil it is to your own souls––and when the second warning was fulfilled [We sent them] to shame your faces and enter the place of worship as they did the first time, and utterly destroy whatever fell into their power.
8
عَسَىʿasā
"(It) may be
رَبُّكُمْrabbukum
that your Lord
أَنْan
that your Lord
يَرْحَمَكُمْyarḥamakum
(may) have mercy upon you.
وَإِنْwa-in
But if
عُدْتُمْʿudttum
you return,
عُدْنَاʿud'nā
We will return.
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnā
And We have made
جَهَنَّمَjahannama
Hell,
لِلْكَافِرِينَlil'kāfirīna
for the disbelievers,
حَصِيرًاḥaṣīran
a prison-bed."
Your Lord may yet have mercy on you, but if you do the same again, so shall We: We have made Hell a prison for those who defy [Our warning].

إِنَّinna
Indeed,
هَذَاhādhā
this,
الْقُرْءَانَl-qur'āna
the Quran,
يَهْدِيyahdī
guides
لِلَّتِيlillatī
to that
هِيَhiya
which
أَقْوَمُaqwamu
(is) most straight
وَيُبَشِّرُwayubashiru
and gives glad tidings
الْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīna
to the believers -
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūna
do
الصَّالِحَاتِl-ṣāliḥāti
the righteous deeds,
أَنَّanna
that
لَهُمْlahum
for them
أَجْرًاajran
(is) a reward
كَبِيرًاkabīran
great,
This Quran does indeed show the straightest way. It gives the faithful who do right the good news that they will have a great reward and
10
وَأَنَّwa-anna
And that
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
لَاlā
(do) not
يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūna
believe
بِالْءَاخِرَةِbil-ākhirati
in the Hereafter,
أَعْتَدْنَاaʿtadnā
We have prepared
لَهُمْlahum
for them
عَذَابًاʿadhāban
a punishment
أَلِيمًاalīman
painful.
warns that We have prepared an agonizing punishment for those who do not believe in the world to come.
