Al-Anbiya

1

اقْتَرَبَiq'taraba
(Has) approached
لِلنَّاسِlilnnāsi
for [the] mankind
حِسَابُهُمْḥisābuhum
their account,
وَهُمْwahum
while they
فِيfī
(are) in
غَفْلَةٍghaflatin
heedlessness
مُعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna
turning away.
Ever closer to people draws their reckoning, while they turn away, heedless.

مَاmā
Not
يَأْتِيهِمْyatīhim
comes to them
مِنْmin
of
ذِكْرٍdhik'rin
a Reminder
مِنْmin
from
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim
their Lord,
مُحْدَثٍmuḥ'dathin
anew
إِلَّاillā
except
اسْتَمَعُوهُis'tamaʿūhu
they listen to it
وَهُمْwahum
while they
يَلْعَبُونَyalʿabūna
(are at) play
Whenever any fresh revelation comes to them from their Lord, they listen to it playfully

لَاهِيَةًlāhiyatan
Distracted
قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhum
their hearts.
وَأَسَرُّواwa-asarrū
And they conceal
النَّجْوَىl-najwā
the private conversation,
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
ظَلَمُواẓalamū
[they] wronged,
هَلْhal
"Is
هَذَاhādhā
this
إِلَّاillā
except
بَشَرٌbasharun
a human being
مِثْلُكُمْmith'lukum
like you?
أَفَتَأْتُونَafatatūna
So would you app
السِّحْرَl-siḥ'ra
the magic
وَأَنْتُمْwa-antum
while you
تُبْصِرُونَtub'ṣirūna
see (it)?"
with frivolous hearts. The evildoers conferred in secret: ‘Is this man anything but a mortal like yourselves? Are you going to fall under his spell with your eyes wide open?’

قَالَqāla
He said,
رَبِّيrabbī
"My Lord
يَعْلَمُyaʿlamu
knows
الْقَوْلَl-qawla
the word
فِيfī
in
السَّمَاءِl-samāi
the heavens
وَالْأَرْضِwal-arḍi
and the earth.
وَهُوَwahuwa
And He
السَّمِيعُl-samīʿu
(is) the All-Hearer,
الْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmu
the All-Knower."
He said, ‘My Lord knows everything that is said in the heavens and the earth: He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.’

بَلْbal
Nay,
قَالُواqālū
they say,
أَضْغَاثُaḍghāthu
"Muddled
أَحْلَامٍaḥlāmin
dreams;
بَلِbali
nay,
افْتَرَاهُif'tarāhu
he (has) invented it;
بَلْbal
nay,
هُوَhuwa
he
شَاعِرٌshāʿirun
(is) a poet.
فَلْيَأْتِنَاfalyatinā
So let him bring us
بِءَايَةٍbiāyatin
a sign
كَمَاkamā
like what
أُرْسِلَur'sila
was sent
الْأَوَّلُونَl-awalūna
(to) the former."
Some say, ‘Muddled dreams’; others, ‘He made it up’; yet others, ‘He is just a poet, let him show us a sign as previous messengers did.’

مَاmā
Not
ءَامَنَتْāmanat
believed
قَبْلَهُمْqablahum
before them
مِنْmin
any
قَرْيَةٍqaryatin
town
أَهْلَكْنَاهَاahlaknāhā
which We destroyed,
أَفَهُمْafahum
so will they
يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūna
believe?
But of the communities We destroyed before them not a single one believed. Will these now believe?

وَمَاwamā
And not
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnā
We sent
قَبْلَكَqablaka
before you
إِلَّاillā
except
رِجَالًاrijālan
men,
نُوحِيnūḥī
We revealed
إِلَيْهِمْilayhim
to them.
فَسْءَلُواfasalū
So ask
أَهْلَahla
(the) people
الذِّكْرِl-dhik'ri
(of) the Reminder,
إِنْin
if
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you
لَاlā
(do) not
تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūna
know.
And even before your time [Prophet], all the messengers We sent were only men We inspired–– if you [disbelievers] do not know, ask people who know the Scripture––

وَمَاwamā
And not
جَعَلْنَاهُمْjaʿalnāhum
We made them
جَسَدًاjasadan
bodies
لَاlā
not
يَأْكُلُونَyakulūna
eating
الطَّعَامَl-ṭaʿāma
the food,
وَمَاwamā
and not
كَانُواkānū
they were
خَالِدِينَkhālidīna
immortals.
We did not give them bodies that ate no food, nor were they immortal.

ثُمَّthumma
Then
صَدَقْنَاهُمُṣadaqnāhumu
We fulfilled (for) them
الْوَعْدَl-waʿda
the promise,
فَأَنْجَيْنَاهُمْfa-anjaynāhum
and We saved them
وَمَنْwaman
and whom
نَشَاءُnashāu
We
وَأَهْلَكْنَاwa-ahlaknā
and We destroyed
الْمُسْرِفِينَl-mus'rifīna
the transgressors.
We fulfilled Our promise to them in the end: We saved them and those We wished to save, and We destroyed those who exceeded all bounds.

لَقَدْlaqad
Indeed,
أَنْزَلْنَاanzalnā
We (have) sent down
إِلَيْكُمْilaykum
to you
كِتَابًاkitāban
a Book
فِيهِfīhi
in it
ذِكْرُكُمْdhik'rukum
(is) your mention.
أَفَلَاafalā
Then will not
تَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūna
you use reason?
And now We have sent down to you [people] a Scripture to remind you. Will you not use your reason?
