يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O mankind!
النَّاسُl-nāsu
O mankind!
اتَّقُواittaqū
Fear
رَبَّكُمْrabbakum
your Lord.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
زَلْزَلَةَzalzalata
(the) convulsion
السَّاعَةِl-sāʿati
(of) the Hour
شَيْءٌshayon
(is) a thing
عَظِيمٌʿaẓīmun
great.
People, be mindful of your Lord, for the earthquake of the Last Hour will be a mighty thing:
2
يَوْمَyawma
(The) Day
تَرَوْنَهَاtarawnahā
you will see it,
تَذْهَلُtadhhalu
will forget
كُلُّkullu
every
مُرْضِعَةٍmur'ḍiʿatin
nursing mother
عَمَّاʿammā
that which
أَرْضَعَتْarḍaʿat
she was nursing,
وَتَضَعُwataḍaʿu
and will deliver
كُلُّkullu
every
ذَاتِdhāti
pregnant woman
حَمْلٍḥamlin
pregnant woman
حَمْلَهَاḥamlahā
her load,
وَتَرَىwatarā
and you will see
النَّاسَl-nāsa
[the] mankind
سُكَارَىsukārā
intoxicated,
وَمَاwamā
while not
هُمْhum
they
بِسُكَارَىbisukārā
(are) intoxicated;
وَلَكِنَّwalākinna
but
عَذَابَʿadhāba
(the) punishment
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah
شَدِيدٌshadīdun
(will be) severe.
on the Day you see it, every nursing mother will think no more of her baby, every pregnant female will miscarry, you will think people are drunk when they are not, so severe will be God’s torment.
3
وَمِنَwamina
And among
النَّاسِl-nāsi
the mankind
مَنْman
(is he) who
يُجَادِلُyujādilu
disputes
فِيfī
concerning
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
بِغَيْرِbighayri
without
عِلْمٍʿil'min
knowledge
وَيَتَّبِعُwayattabiʿu
and follows
كُلَّkulla
every
شَيْطَانٍshayṭānin
devil
مَرِيدٍmarīdin
rebellious.
Yet still there are some who, with no knowledge, argue about God, who follow every devilish rebel
4
كُتِبَkutiba
It has been decreed
عَلَيْهِʿalayhi
for him
أَنَّهُannahu
that he
مَنْman
who
تَوَلَّاهُtawallāhu
befriends him,
فَأَنَّهُfa-annahu
then indeed, he
يُضِلُّهُyuḍilluhu
will misguide him
وَيَهْدِيهِwayahdīhi
and will guide him
إِلَىilā
to
عَذَابِʿadhābi
(the) punishment
السَّعِيرِl-saʿīri
(of) the Blaze.
fated to lead astray those who take his side, and guide them to the suffering of the blazing flame.
5
يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O mankind!
النَّاسُl-nāsu
O mankind!
إِنْin
If
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you are
فِيfī
in
رَيْبٍraybin
doubt
مِنَmina
about
الْبَعْثِl-baʿthi
the Resurrection,
فَإِنَّاfa-innā
then indeed, We
خَلَقْنَاكُمْkhalaqnākum
We created you
مِنْmin
from
تُرَابٍturābin
dust,
ثُمَّthumma
then
مِنْmin
from
نُطْفَةٍnuṭ'fatin
a semen-drop
ثُمَّthumma
then
مِنْmin
from
عَلَقَةٍʿalaqatin
a clinging substance
ثُمَّthumma
then
مِنْmin
from
مُضْغَةٍmuḍ'ghatin
an embryonic lump,
مُخَلَّقَةٍmukhallaqatin
formed
وَغَيْرِwaghayri
and unformed,
مُخَلَّقَةٍmukhallaqatin
and unformed,
لِنُبَيِّنَlinubayyina
that We may make clear
لَكُمْlakum
to you.
وَنُقِرُّwanuqirru
And We cause to remain
فِيfī
in
الْأَرْحَامِl-arḥāmi
the wombs
مَاmā
what
نَشَاءُnashāu
We will
إِلَىilā
for
أَجَلٍajalin
a term
مُسَمًّىmusamman
appointed,
ثُمَّthumma
then
نُخْرِجُكُمْnukh'rijukum
We bring you out
طِفْلًاṭif'lan
(as) a child,
ثُمَّthumma
[then]
لِتَبْلُغُواlitablughū
that you may reach
أَشُدَّكُمْashuddakum
[your] maturity.
وَمِنْكُمْwaminkum
And among you
مَنْman
(is he) who
يُتَوَفَّىyutawaffā
dies,
وَمِنْكُمْwaminkum
and among you
مَنْman
(is he) who
يُرَدُّyuraddu
is returned
إِلَىilā
to
أَرْذَلِardhali
the most abject
الْعُمُرِl-ʿumuri
age,
لِكَيْلَاlikaylā
so that not
يَعْلَمَyaʿlama
he knows,
مِنْmin
after
بَعْدِbaʿdi
after
عِلْمٍʿil'min
having known,
شَيْئًاshayan
anything.
وَتَرَىwatarā
And you see
الْأَرْضَl-arḍa
the earth
هَامِدَةًhāmidatan
barren
فَإِذَاfa-idhā
then when
أَنْزَلْنَاanzalnā
We send down
عَلَيْهَاʿalayhā
on it
الْمَاءَl-māa
water,
اهْتَزَّتْih'tazzat
it gets stirred
وَرَبَتْwarabat
and it swells
وَأَنْبَتَتْwa-anbatat
and grows
مِنْmin
of
كُلِّkulli
every
زَوْجٍzawjin
kind
بَهِيجٍbahījin
beautiful.
People, [remember,] if you doubt the Resurrection, that We created you from dust, then a drop of fluid, then a clinging form, then a lump of flesh, both shaped and unshaped: We mean to make Our power clear to you. Whatever We choose We cause to remain in the womb for an appointed time, then We bring you forth as infants and then you grow and reach maturity. Some die young and some are left to live on to such an age that they forget all they once knew. You sometimes see the earth lifeless, yet when We send down water it stirs and swells and produces every kind of joyous growth:
6
ذَلِكَdhālika
That
بِأَنَّbi-anna
(is) because,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah -
هُوَhuwa
He
الْحَقُّl-ḥaqu
(is) the Truth.
وَأَنَّهُwa-annahu
And that He
يُحْيِيyuḥ'yī
[He] gives life
الْمَوْتَىl-mawtā
(to) the dead,
وَأَنَّهُwa-annahu
and that He
عَلَىʿalā
(is) over
كُلِّkulli
every
شَيْءٍshayin
thing
قَدِيرٌqadīrun
All-Powerful.
this is because God is the Truth; He brings the dead back to life; He has power over everything.
7
وَأَنَّwa-anna
And that
السَّاعَةَl-sāʿata
the Hour
ءَاتِيَةٌātiyatun
will come,
لَاlā
(there is) no
رَيْبَrayba
doubt
فِيهَاfīhā
about it,
وَأَنَّwa-anna
and that
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
يَبْعَثُyabʿathu
will resurrect
مَنْman
(those) who
فِيfī
(are) in
الْقُبُورِl-qubūri
the graves.
There is no doubt that the Last Hour is bound to come, nor that God will raise the dead from their graves,
8
وَمِنَwamina
And among
النَّاسِl-nāsi
mankind
مَنْman
(is he) who
يُجَادِلُyujādilu
disputes
فِيfī
concerning
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
بِغَيْرِbighayri
without
عِلْمٍʿil'min
any knowledge
وَلَاwalā
and not
هُدًىhudan
any guidance
وَلَاwalā
and not
كِتَابٍkitābin
a Book
مُنِيرٍmunīrin
enlightening,
yet still there are some who, with no knowledge or guidance or any book of enlightenment, argue about God,
9
ثَانِيَthāniya
Twisting
عِطْفِهِʿiṭ'fihi
his neck
لِيُضِلَّliyuḍilla
to mislead
عَنْʿan
from
سَبِيلِsabīli
(the) way
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah.
لَهُlahu
For him
فِيfī
in
الدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā
the world
خِزْيٌkhiz'yun
(is) disgrace,
وَنُذِيقُهُwanudhīquhu
and We will make him
يَوْمَyawma
(on the) Day
الْقِيَامَةِl-qiyāmati
(of) Resurrection
عَذَابَʿadhāba
(the) punishment
الْحَرِيقِl-ḥarīqi
(of) the Burning Fire.
turning scornfully aside to lead others away from God’s path. Disgrace in this world awaits such a person and, on the Day of Resurrection, We shall make him taste the suffering of the Fire.
10
ذَلِكَdhālika
That
بِمَاbimā
(is) for what
قَدَّمَتْqaddamat
have sent forth
يَدَاكَyadāka
your hands,
وَأَنَّwa-anna
and that
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
لَيْسَlaysa
is not
بِظَلَّامٍbiẓallāmin
unjust
لِلْعَبِيدِlil'ʿabīdi
to His slaves.
[It will be said], ‘This is for what you have stored up with your own hands: God is never unjust to His creatures.’
