An-Nur

1

سُورَةٌsūratun
A Surah -
أَنْزَلْنَاهَاanzalnāhā
We (have) sent it down
وَفَرَضْنَاهَاwafaraḍnāhā
and We (have) made it obligatory,
وَأَنْزَلْنَاwa-anzalnā
and
فِيهَاfīhā
therein
ءَايَاتٍāyātin
Verses
بَيِّنَاتٍbayyinātin
clear,
لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakum
so that you may
تَذَكَّرُونَtadhakkarūna
take heed.
This is a sura We have sent down and made obligatory: We have sent down clear revelations in it, so that you may take heed.

الزَّانِيَةُal-zāniyatu
The fornicatress
وَالزَّانِيwal-zānī
and the fornicator,
فَاجْلِدُواfa-ij'lidū
[then] flog
كُلَّkulla
each
وَاحِدٍwāḥidin
one
مِنْهُمَاmin'humā
of them
مِائَةَmi-ata
(with) hundred
جَلْدَةٍjaldatin
lash(es).
وَلَاwalā
And (let) not
تَأْخُذْكُمْtakhudh'kum
withhold you
بِهِمَاbihimā
pity for them
رَأْفَةٌrafatun
pity for them
فِيfī
concerning
دِينِdīni
(the) religion of Allah,
اللَّهِl-lahi
(the) religion of Allah,
إِنْin
if
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you
تُؤْمِنُونَtu'minūna
believe
بِاللَّهِbil-lahi
in Allah
وَالْيَوْمِwal-yawmi
and the Day
الْءَاخِرِl-ākhiri
the Last.
وَلْيَشْهَدْwalyashhad
And let witness
عَذَابَهُمَاʿadhābahumā
their punishment
طَائِفَةٌṭāifatun
a group
مِنَmina
of
الْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīna
the believers.
Strike the adulteress and the adulterer one hundred times. Do not let compassion for them keep you from carrying out God’s law––if you believe in God and the Last Day––and ensure that a group of believers witnesses the punishment.

الزَّانِيal-zānī
The fornicator
لَاlā
(will) not
يَنْكِحُyankiḥu
marry
إِلَّاillā
except
زَانِيَةًzāniyatan
a fornicatress,
أَوْaw
or
مُشْرِكَةًmush'rikatan
a polytheist woman,
وَالزَّانِيَةُwal-zāniyatu
and the fornicatress -
لَاlā
(will) not
يَنْكِحُهَاyankiḥuhā
marry her
إِلَّاillā
except
زَانٍzānin
a fornicator
أَوْaw
or
مُشْرِكٌmush'rikun
a polytheist man.
وَحُرِّمَwaḥurrima
And is forbidden
ذَلِكَdhālika
that
عَلَىʿalā
to
الْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīna
the believers.
The adulterer is only [fit] to marry an adulteress or an idolatress, and the adulteress is only [fit] to marry an adulterer or an idolater: such behaviour is forbidden to believers.

وَالَّذِينَwa-alladhīna
And those who
يَرْمُونَyarmūna
accuse
الْمُحْصَنَاتِl-muḥ'ṣanāti
the chaste women,
ثُمَّthumma
then
لَمْlam
not
يَأْتُواyatū
they bring
بِأَرْبَعَةِbi-arbaʿati
four
شُهَدَاءَshuhadāa
witnesses,
فَاجْلِدُوهُمْfa-ij'lidūhum
then flog them
ثَمَانِينَthamānīna
(with) eighty
جَلْدَةًjaldatan
lashe(s)
وَلَاwalā
and (do) not
تَقْبَلُواtaqbalū
accept
لَهُمْlahum
their
شَهَادَةًshahādatan
testimony
أَبَدًاabadan
ever.
وَأُولَئِكَwa-ulāika
And those,
هُمُhumu
they
الْفَاسِقُونَl-fāsiqūna
(are) the defiantly disobedient,
As for those who accuse chaste women of fornication, and then fail to provide four witnesses, strike them eighty times, and reject their testimony ever afterwards: they are the lawbreakers,

إِلَّاillā
Except
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
تَابُواtābū
repent
مِنْmin
after
بَعْدِbaʿdi
after
ذَلِكَdhālika
that
وَأَصْلَحُواwa-aṣlaḥū
and reform.
فَإِنَّfa-inna
Then indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
غَفُورٌghafūrun
(is) Oft-Forgiving,
رَحِيمٌraḥīmun
Most Merciful.
except for those who repent later and make amends––God is most forgiving and merciful.

وَالَّذِينَwa-alladhīna
And those who
يَرْمُونَyarmūna
accuse
أَزْوَاجَهُمْazwājahum
their spouses
وَلَمْwalam
and not
يَكُنْyakun
have
لَهُمْlahum
for them
شُهَدَاءُshuhadāu
witnesses
إِلَّاillā
except
أَنْفُسُهُمْanfusuhum
themselves,
فَشَهَادَةُfashahādatu
then (the) testimony
أَحَدِهِمْaḥadihim
(of) one of them
أَرْبَعُarbaʿu
(is) four
شَهَادَاتٍshahādātin
testimonies
بِاللَّهِbil-lahi
by Allah,
إِنَّهُinnahu
that he
لَمِنَlamina
(is) surely of
الصَّادِقِينَl-ṣādiqīna
the truthful.
As for those who accuse their own wives of adultery, but have no other witnesses, let each one four times call God to witness that he is telling the truth,

وَالْخَامِسَةُwal-khāmisatu
And the fifth
أَنَّanna
that
لَعْنَةَlaʿnata
(the) curse of Allah
اللَّهِl-lahi
(the) curse of Allah
عَلَيْهِʿalayhi
(be) upon him
إِنْin
if
كَانَkāna
he is
مِنَmina
of
الْكَاذِبِينَl-kādhibīna
the liars.
and, the fifth time, call God to reject him if he is lying;

وَيَدْرَؤُاwayadra-u
But it would prevent
عَنْهَاʿanhā
from her
الْعَذَابَl-ʿadhāba
the punishment
أَنْan
that
تَشْهَدَtashhada
she bears witness
أَرْبَعَarbaʿa
four
شَهَادَاتٍshahādātin
testimonies
بِاللَّهِbil-lahi
by Allah
إِنَّهُinnahu
that he
لَمِنَlamina
(is) surely of
الْكَاذِبِينَl-kādhibīna
the liars.
punishment shall be averted from his wife if she in turn four times calls God to witness that her husband is lying

وَالْخَامِسَةَwal-khāmisata
And the fifth,
أَنَّanna
that
غَضَبَghaḍaba
the wrath of Allah
اللَّهِl-lahi
the wrath of Allah
عَلَيْهَاʿalayhā
(be) upon her
إِنْin
if
كَانَkāna
he is
مِنَmina
of
الصَّادِقِينَl-ṣādiqīna
the truthful.
and, the fifth time, calls God to reject her if he is telling the truth.

وَلَوْلَاwalawlā
And if not
فَضْلُfaḍlu
(for) the Grace of Allah
اللَّهِl-lahi
(for) the Grace of Allah
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
upon you
وَرَحْمَتُهُwaraḥmatuhu
and His Mercy -
وَأَنَّwa-anna
and that,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
تَوَّابٌtawwābun
(is) Oft-Returning (to Mercy),
حَكِيمٌḥakīmun
All-Wise.
If it were not for God’s bounty and mercy towards you, if it were not that God accepts repentance and is wise . . .!
