المalif-lam-meem
Alif Laam Meem.
Alif Lam Mim
2
أَحَسِبَaḥasiba
Do think
النَّاسُl-nāsu
the people
أَنْan
that
يُتْرَكُواyut'rakū
they will be left
أَنْan
because
يَقُولُواyaqūlū
they say,
ءَامَنَّاāmannā
"We believe"
وَهُمْwahum
and they
لَاlā
will not be tested?
يُفْتَنُونَyuf'tanūna
will not be tested?
Do people think they will be left alone after saying ‘We believe’ without being put to the test?
3
وَلَقَدْwalaqad
And indeed,
فَتَنَّاfatannā
We tested
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
مِنْmin
(were) before them.
قَبْلِهِمْqablihim
(were) before them.
فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّfalayaʿlamanna
And Allah will surely make evident
اللَّهُl-lahu
And Allah will surely make evident
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
صَدَقُواṣadaqū
(are) truthful
وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّwalayaʿlamanna
and He will surely make evident
الْكَاذِبِينَl-kādhibīna
the liars.
We tested those who went before them: God will certainly mark out which ones are truthful and which are lying.
4
أَمْam
Or
حَسِبَḥasiba
think
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūna
do
السَّيِّئَاتِl-sayiāti
evil deeds
أَنْan
that
يَسْبِقُونَاyasbiqūnā
they can outrun Us.
سَاءَsāa
Evil is
مَاmā
what
يَحْكُمُونَyaḥkumūna
they judge.
Do the evildoers think they can escape us? How ill they judge!
5
مَنْman
Whoever
كَانَkāna
[is]
يَرْجُواyarjū
hopes
لِقَاءَliqāa
(for the) meeting
اللَّهِl-lahi
(with) Allah,
فَإِنَّfa-inna
then indeed,
أَجَلَajala
(the) Term
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah
لَءَاتٍlaātin
(is) surely coming.
وَهُوَwahuwa
And He
السَّمِيعُl-samīʿu
(is) the All-Hearer,
الْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmu
the All-Knower.
But as for those who strive for their meeting with God, God’s appointed time is bound to come; He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.
6
وَمَنْwaman
And whoever
جَاهَدَjāhada
strives
فَإِنَّمَاfa-innamā
then only
يُجَاهِدُyujāhidu
he strives
لِنَفْسِهِlinafsihi
for himself.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
لَغَنِيٌّlaghaniyyun
(is) Free from need
عَنِʿani
of
الْعَالَمِينَl-ʿālamīna
the worlds.
Those who exert themselves do so for their own benefit––God does not need His creatures––
7
وَالَّذِينَwa-alladhīna
And those who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believe
وَعَمِلُواwaʿamilū
and do
الصَّالِحَاتِl-ṣāliḥāti
righteous (deeds),
لَنُكَفِّرَنَّlanukaffiranna
surely, We will remove
عَنْهُمْʿanhum
from them
سَيِّئَاتِهِمْsayyiātihim
their evil deeds,
وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْwalanajziyannahum
and We will surely reward them
أَحْسَنَaḥsana
(the) best
الَّذِيalladhī
(of) what
كَانُواkānū
they used
يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūna
(to) do.
We shall certainly blot out the misdeeds of those who believe and do good deeds, and We shall reward them according to the best of their actions.
8
وَوَصَّيْنَاwawaṣṣaynā
And We have enjoined
الْإِنْسَانَl-insāna
(on) man
بِوَالِدَيْهِbiwālidayhi
goodness to his parents,
حُسْنًاḥus'nan
goodness to his parents,
وَإِنْwa-in
but if
جَاهَدَاكَjāhadāka
they both strive against you
لِتُشْرِكَlitush'rika
to make you associate
بِيbī
with Me
مَاmā
what
لَيْسَlaysa
not
لَكَlaka
you have
بِهِbihi
of it
عِلْمٌʿil'mun
any knowledge,
فَلَاfalā
then (do) not
تُطِعْهُمَاtuṭiʿ'humā
obey both of them.
إِلَيَّilayya
To Me
مَرْجِعُكُمْmarjiʿukum
(is) your return,
فَأُنَبِّئُكُمْfa-unabbi-ukum
and I will inform you
بِمَاbimā
about what
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you used
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūna
(to) do.
We have commanded people to be good to their parents, but do not obey them if they strive to make you serve, beside Me, anything of which you have no knowledge: you will all return to Me, and I shall inform you of what you have done.
9
وَالَّذِينَwa-alladhīna
And those who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believe
وَعَمِلُواwaʿamilū
and do
الصَّالِحَاتِl-ṣāliḥāti
righteous deeds
لَنُدْخِلَنَّهُمْlanud'khilannahum
We will surely admit them
فِيfī
among
الصَّالِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīna
the righteous.
We shall be sure to admit those who believe and do good deeds to the ranks of the righteous.
10
وَمِنَwamina
And of
النَّاسِl-nāsi
the people
مَنْman
(is he) who
يَقُولُyaqūlu
says,
ءَامَنَّاāmannā
"We believe
بِاللَّهِbil-lahi
in Allah."
فَإِذَاfa-idhā
But when
أُوذِيَūdhiya
he is harmed
فِيfī
in
اللَّهِl-lahi
(the Way of) Allah
جَعَلَjaʿala
he considers
فِتْنَةَfit'nata
(the) trial
النَّاسِl-nāsi
(of) the people
كَعَذَابِkaʿadhābi
as (the) punishment
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah.
وَلَئِنْwala-in
But if
جَاءَjāa
comes
نَصْرٌnaṣrun
victory
مِنْmin
from
رَبِّكَrabbika
your Lord,
لَيَقُولُنَّlayaqūlunna
surely they say,
إِنَّاinnā
"Indeed, we
كُنَّاkunnā
were
مَعَكُمْmaʿakum
with you."
أَوَلَيْسَawalaysa
Is not
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah
بِأَعْلَمَbi-aʿlama
most knowing
بِمَاbimā
of what
فِيfī
(is) in
صُدُورِṣudūri
(the) breasts
الْعَالَمِينَl-ʿālamīna
(of) the worlds?
There are some people who say, ‘We believe in God,’ but, when they suffer for His cause, they think that human persecution is as severe as God’s punishment––yet, if any help comes to you [Prophet] from your Lord, they will say, ‘We have always been with you’. Does God not know best what is in everyone’s hearts?
