1
المalif-lam-meem
Alif Lam Meem.
Alif Lam Mim

غُلِبَتِghulibati
Have been defeated
الرُّومُl-rūmu
the Romans
The Byzantines have been defeated
3
فِيfī
In
أَدْنَىadnā
(the) nearest
الْأَرْضِl-arḍi
land.
وَهُمْwahum
But they,
مِنْmin
after
بَعْدِbaʿdi
after
غَلَبِهِمْghalabihim
their defeat,
سَيَغْلِبُونَsayaghlibūna
will overcome
in a nearby land. They will reverse their defeat with a victory
4
فِيfī
Within
بِضْعِbiḍ'ʿi
a few
سِنِينَsinīna
years.
لِلَّهِlillahi

before

before
وَمِنْwamin
and after.

and after.
وَيَوْمَئِذٍwayawma-idhin
And that day
يَفْرَحُyafraḥu
will rejoice
الْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūna
the believers
in a few years’ time––God is in command, first and last. On that day, the believers will rejoice
5
بِنَصْرِbinaṣri
With (the) help
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah.
يَنْصُرُyanṣuru
He helps
مَنْman
whom
يَشَاءُyashāu
He wills.
وَهُوَwahuwa
And He
الْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzu
(is) the All-Mighty,
الرَّحِيمُl-raḥīmu
the Most Merciful.
at God’s help. He helps whoever He pleases: He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
6
وَعْدَwaʿda
(It is the) Promise
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah.
لَاlā
(Does) not
يُخْلِفُyukh'lifu
fail
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah
وَعْدَهُwaʿdahu
(in) His promise,
وَلَكِنَّwalākinna
but
أَكْثَرَakthara
most (of)
النَّاسِl-nāsi
[the] people
لَاlā
(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna
know.
This is God’s promise: God never breaks His promise, but most people do not know;
7
يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna
They know
ظَاهِرًاẓāhiran
(the) apparent
مِنَmina
of
الْحَيَوةِl-ḥayati
the life
الدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā
(of) the world,
وَهُمْwahum
but they,
عَنِʿani
about
الْءَاخِرَةِl-ākhirati
the Hereafter,
هُمْhum
[they]
غَافِلُونَghāfilūna
(are) heedless.
they only know the outer surface of this present life and are heedless of the life to come.
8
أَوَلَمْawalam
Do not
يَتَفَكَّرُواyatafakkarū
they ponder
فِيfī
within
أَنْفُسِهِمْanfusihim
themselves?
مَاmā
Not
خَلَقَkhalaqa
Allah (has) created
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah (has) created
السَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwāti
the heavens
وَالْأَرْضَwal-arḍa
and the earth,
وَمَاwamā
and what
بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumā
(is) between them
إِلَّاillā
except
بِالْحَقِّbil-ḥaqi
in truth
وَأَجَلٍwa-ajalin
and (for) a term
مُسَمًّىmusamman
appointed.
وَإِنَّwa-inna
And indeed,
كَثِيرًاkathīran
many
مِنَmina
of
النَّاسِl-nāsi
the people
بِلِقَاءِbiliqāi
in (the) meeting
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim
(with) their Lord
لَكَافِرُونَlakāfirūna
surely (are) disbelievers.
Have they not thought about their own selves? God did not create the heavens and earth and everything between them without a serious purpose and an appointed time, yet many people deny that they will meet their Lord.
9
أَوَلَمْawalam
Have not
يَسِيرُواyasīrū
they traveled
فِيfī
in
الْأَرْضِl-arḍi
the earth
فَيَنْظُرُواfayanẓurū
and observed
كَيْفَkayfa
how
كَانَkāna
was
عَاقِبَةُʿāqibatu
(the) end
الَّذِينَalladhīna
(of) those
مِنْmin
before them?
قَبْلِهِمْqablihim
before them?
كَانُواkānū
They were
أَشَدَّashadda
mightier
مِنْهُمْmin'hum
than them
قُوَّةًquwwatan
(in) strength,
وَأَثَارُواwa-athārū
and they dug
الْأَرْضَl-arḍa
the earth
وَعَمَرُوهَاwaʿamarūhā
and built (on) it
أَكْثَرَakthara
more
مِمَّاmimmā
than what
عَمَرُوهَاʿamarūhā
they have built (on) it.
وَجَاءَتْهُمْwajāathum
And came (to) them
رُسُلُهُمْrusuluhum
their Messengers
بِالْبَيِّنَاتِbil-bayināti
with clear proofs.
فَمَاfamā
So not
كَانَkāna
was
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah
لِيَظْلِمَهُمْliyaẓlimahum
to wrong them
وَلَكِنْwalākin
but
كَانُواkānū
they were
أَنْفُسَهُمْanfusahum
themselves
يَظْلِمُونَyaẓlimūna
(doing) wrong.
Have they not travelled through the land and seen how their predecessors met their end? They were mightier than them: they cultivated the earth more and built more upon it. Their own mes-sengers also came to them with clear signs: God did not wrong them; they wronged themselves.
10
ثُمَّthumma
Then
كَانَkāna
was
عَاقِبَةَʿāqibata
(the) end
الَّذِينَalladhīna
(of) those who
أَسَاءُواasāū
did evil -
السُّوأَىl-sūā
the evil,
أَنْan
because
كَذَّبُواkadhabū
they denied
بِءَايَاتِbiāyāti
(the) Signs
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah
وَكَانُواwakānū
and were
بِهَاbihā
of them
يَسْتَهْزِءُونَyastahziūna
making mockery.
Later the evildoers met a terrible end for rejecting and [repeatedly] mocking God’s revelations.
