Alif Lam Meem.
Alif Lam Mim

2

تِلْكَtil'ka
These
ءَايَاتُāyātu
(are) Verses
الْكِتَابِl-kitābi
(of) the Book
الْحَكِيمِl-ḥakīmi
the Wise,
These are the verses of the wise Scripture,

3

هُدًىhudan
A guidance
وَرَحْمَةًwaraḥmatan
and a mercy
لِلْمُحْسِنِينَlil'muḥ'sinīna
for the good-doers,
[with] guidance and mercy for those who do good,

4

الَّذِينَalladhīna
Those who
يُقِيمُونَyuqīmūna
establish
الصَّلَوةَl-ṣalata
the prayer
وَيُؤْتُونَwayu'tūna
and give
الزَّكَوةَl-zakata
zakah
وَهُمْwahum
and they,
بِالْءَاخِرَةِbil-ākhirati
in the Hereafter,
هُمْhum
[they]
يُوقِنُونَyūqinūna
believe firmly.
who keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and are certain of the Hereafter:

أُولَئِكَulāika
Those
عَلَىʿalā
(are) on
هُدًىhudan
guidance
مِنْmin
from
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim
their Lord,
وَأُولَئِكَwa-ulāika
and those
هُمُhumu
[they]
الْمُفْلِحُونَl-muf'liḥūna
(are) the successful.
these are rightly guided by their Lord, and it is they who will prosper.

وَمِنَwamina
And of
النَّاسِl-nāsi
the mankind
مَنْman
(is he) who
يَشْتَرِيyashtarī
purchases,
لَهْوَlahwa
idle tales
الْحَدِيثِl-ḥadīthi
idle tales
لِيُضِلَّliyuḍilla
to mislead
عَنْʿan
from
سَبِيلِsabīli
(the) path
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah
بِغَيْرِbighayri
without
عِلْمٍʿil'min
knowledge,
وَيَتَّخِذَهَاwayattakhidhahā
and takes it
هُزُوًاhuzuwan
(in) ridicule.
أُولَئِكَulāika
Those
لَهُمْlahum
for them
عَذَابٌʿadhābun
(is) a punishment
مُهِينٌmuhīnun
humiliating.
But there is the sort of person who pays for distracting tales, intending, without any knowledge, to lead others from God’s way, and to hold it up to ridicule. There will be humiliating torment for him!

وَإِذَاwa-idhā
And when
تُتْلَىtut'lā
are recited
عَلَيْهِʿalayhi
to him
ءَايَاتُنَاāyātunā
Our Verses,
وَلَّىwallā
he turns away
مُسْتَكْبِرًاmus'takbiran
arrogantly
كَأَنْka-an
as if
لَمْlam
not
يَسْمَعْهَاyasmaʿhā
he (had) heard them,
كَأَنَّka-anna
as if
فِي
in
أُذُنَيْهِudhunayhi
his ears
وَقْرًاwaqran
(is) deafness.
فَبَشِّرْهُfabashir'hu
So give him tidings
بِعَذَابٍbiʿadhābin
of a punishment
أَلِيمٍalīmin
painful.
When Our verses are recited to him, he turns away disdainfully as if he had not heard them, as if there were heaviness in his ears. Tell him that there will be a painful torment!

إِنَّinna
Indeed,
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believe
وَعَمِلُواwaʿamilū
and do
الصَّالِحَاتِl-ṣāliḥāti
righteous deeds,
لَهُمْlahum
for them
جَنَّاتُjannātu
(are) Gardens
النَّعِيمِl-naʿīmi
(of) Delight,
But for those who believe and do righteous deeds, there will be Gardens of bliss

خَالِدِينَkhālidīna
(To) abide forever
فِيهَاfīhā
in it.
وَعْدَwaʿda
(The) Promise of Allah
اللَّهِl-lahi
(The) Promise of Allah
حَقًّاḥaqqan
(is) true.
وَهُوَwahuwa
And He
الْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzu
(is) the All-Mighty,
الْحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmu
the All-Wise.
where they will stay: that is God’s true promise, and He is the Almighty, the All Wise.

خَلَقَkhalaqa
He created
السَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwāti
the heavens
بِغَيْرِbighayri
without
عَمَدٍʿamadin
pillars
تَرَوْنَهَاtarawnahā
that you see
وَأَلْقَىwa-alqā
and has cast
فِي
in
الْأَرْضِl-arḍi
the earth
رَوَاسِيَrawāsiya
firm mountains
أَنْan
lest
تَمِيدَtamīda
it (might) shake
بِكُمْbikum
with you,
وَبَثَّwabatha
and He dispersed
فِيهَاfīhā
in it
مِنْmin
from
كُلِّkulli
every
دَابَّةٍdābbatin
creature.
وَأَنْزَلْنَاwa-anzalnā
And We sent down
مِنَmina
from
السَّمَاءِl-samāi
the sky
مَاءًmāan
water
فَأَنْبَتْنَاfa-anbatnā
then We caused to grow
فِيهَاfīhā
therein
مِنْmin
of
كُلِّkulli
every
زَوْجٍzawjin
kind
كَرِيمٍkarīmin
noble.
He created the heavens without any visible support, and He placed firm mountains on the earth––in case it should shake under you––and He spread all kinds of animals around it. We sent down water from the sky, with which We made every kind of good plant grow on earth:
