يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O Prophet!
النَّبِيُّl-nabiyu
O Prophet!
اتَّقِittaqi
Fear
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
وَلَاwalā
and (do) not
تُطِعِtuṭiʿi
obey
الْكَافِرِينَl-kāfirīna
the disbelievers
وَالْمُنَافِقِينَwal-munāfiqīna
and the hypocrites.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
كَانَkāna
is
عَلِيمًاʿalīman
All-Knower,
حَكِيمًاḥakīman
All-Wise.
Prophet, be mindful of God and do not give in to the disbelievers and the hypocrites: God is all knowing, all wise.
2
وَاتَّبِعْwa-ittabiʿ
And follow
مَاmā
what
يُوحَىyūḥā
is inspired
إِلَيْكَilayka
to you
مِنْmin
from
رَبِّكَrabbika
your Lord.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
كَانَkāna
is
بِمَاbimā
of what
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūna
you do
خَبِيرًاkhabīran
All-Aware.
Follow what your Lord reveals to you: God is well aware of all your actions.
3
وَتَوَكَّلْwatawakkal
And put your trust
عَلَىʿalā
in
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah.
وَكَفَىwakafā
And Allah is sufficient
بِاللَّهِbil-lahi
And Allah is sufficient
وَكِيلًاwakīlan
(as) Disposer of affairs.
Put your trust in God: God is enough to trust.
4
مَاmā
Not
جَعَلَjaʿala
Allah (has) made
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah (has) made
لِرَجُلٍlirajulin
for any man
مِنْmin
[of]
قَلْبَيْنِqalbayni
two hearts
فِيfī
in
جَوْفِهِjawfihi
his interior.
وَمَاwamā
And not
جَعَلَjaʿala
He (has) made
أَزْوَاجَكُمُazwājakumu
your wives
اللَّائِيallāī
whom
تُظَاهِرُونَtuẓāhirūna
you declare unlawful
مِنْهُنَّmin'hunna
[of them]
أُمَّهَاتِكُمْummahātikum
(as) your mothers.
وَمَاwamā
And not
جَعَلَjaʿala
He has made
أَدْعِيَاءَكُمْadʿiyāakum
your adopted sons
أَبْنَاءَكُمْabnāakum
your sons.
ذَلِكُمْdhālikum
That
قَوْلُكُمْqawlukum
(is) your saying
بِأَفْوَاهِكُمْbi-afwāhikum
by your mouths,
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
but Allah
يَقُولُyaqūlu
says
الْحَقَّl-ḥaqa
the truth,
وَهُوَwahuwa
and He
يَهْدِيyahdī
guides
السَّبِيلَl-sabīla
(to) the Way.
God does not put two hearts within a man’s breast. He does not turn the wives you reject and liken to your mothers’ backs into your real mothers; nor does He make your adopted sons into real sons. These are only words from your mouths, while God speaks the truth and guides people to the right path.
5
ادْعُوهُمْid'ʿūhum
Call them
لِءَابَائِهِمْliābāihim
by their fathers;
هُوَhuwa
it
أَقْسَطُaqsaṭu
(is) more just
عِنْدَʿinda
near
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah.
فَإِنْfa-in
But if
لَمْlam
not
تَعْلَمُواtaʿlamū
you know
ءَابَاءَهُمْābāahum
their fathers -
فَإِخْوَانُكُمْfa-ikh'wānukum
then (they are) your brothers
فِيfī
in
الدِّينِl-dīni
[the] religion
وَمَوَالِيكُمْwamawālīkum
and your friends.
وَلَيْسَwalaysa
But not is
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
upon you
جُنَاحٌjunāḥun
any blame
فِيمَاfīmā
in what
أَخْطَأْتُمْakhṭatum
you made a mistake
بِهِbihi
in it,
وَلَكِنْwalākin
but
مَاmā
what
تَعَمَّدَتْtaʿammadat
intended
قُلُوبُكُمْqulūbukum
your hearts.
وَكَانَwakāna
And Allah
اللَّهُl-lahu
And Allah
غَفُورًاghafūran
(is) Oft-Forgiving,
رَحِيمًاraḥīman
Most Merciful.
Name your adopted sons after their real fathers: this is more equitable in God’s eyes––if you do not know who their fathers are [they are your] ‘brothers-in-religion’ and proteges. You will not be blamed if you make a mistake, only for what your hearts deliberately intend; God is most forgiving and merciful.

النَّبِيُّal-nabiyu
The Prophet
أَوْلَىawlā
(is) closer
بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَbil-mu'minīna
to the believers
مِنْmin
than
أَنْفُسِهِمْanfusihim
their own selves,
وَأَزْوَاجُهُwa-azwājuhu
and his wives
أُمَّهَاتُهُمْummahātuhum
(are) their mothers.
وَأُولُواwa-ulū
And possessors
الْأَرْحَامِl-arḥāmi
(of) relationships,
بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhum
some of them
أَوْلَىawlā
(are) closer
بِبَعْضٍbibaʿḍin
to another
فِيfī
in
كِتَابِkitābi
(the) Decree
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah
مِنَmina
than
الْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīna
the believers
وَالْمُهَاجِرِينَwal-muhājirīna
and the emigrants,
إِلَّاillā
except
أَنْan
that
تَفْعَلُواtafʿalū
you do
إِلَىilā
to
أَوْلِيَائِكُمْawliyāikum
your friends
مَعْرُوفًاmaʿrūfan
a kindness.
كَانَkāna
That is
ذَلِكَdhālika
That is
فِيfī
in
الْكِتَابِl-kitābi
the Book
مَسْطُورًاmasṭūran
written.
The Prophet is more protective towards the believers than they are themselves, while his wives are their mothers. In God’s Scripture, blood-relatives have a stronger claim than other believers and emigrants, though you may still bestow gifts on your proteges. All this is written in the Scripture.

وَإِذْwa-idh
And when
أَخَذْنَاakhadhnā
We took
مِنَmina
from
النَّبِيِّينَl-nabiyīna
the Prophets
مِيثَاقَهُمْmīthāqahum
their Covenant
وَمِنْكَwaminka
and from you
وَمِنْwamin
and from
نُوحٍnūḥin
Nuh
وَإِبْرَاهِيمَwa-ib'rāhīma
and Ibrahim
وَمُوسَىwamūsā
and Musa
وَعِيسَىwaʿīsā
and Isa,
ابْنِib'ni
son
مَرْيَمَmaryama
(of) Maryam.
وَأَخَذْنَاwa-akhadhnā
And We took
مِنْهُمْmin'hum
from them
مِيثَاقًاmīthāqan
a covenant
غَلِيظًاghalīẓan
strong
We took a solemn pledge from the prophets- from you [Muhammad], from Noah, from Abraham, from Moses, from Jesus, son of Mary- We took a solemn pledge from all of them:
8
لِيَسْءَلَliyasala
That He may ask
الصَّادِقِينَl-ṣādiqīna
the truthful
عَنْʿan
about
صِدْقِهِمْṣid'qihim
their truth.
وَأَعَدَّwa-aʿadda
And He has prepared
لِلْكَافِرِينَlil'kāfirīna
for the disbelievers
عَذَابًاʿadhāban
a punishment
أَلِيمًاalīman
painful.
God will question [even] the truthful about their sincerity, and for those who reject the truth He has prepared a painful torment.
9
يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O you
الَّذِينَalladhīna
who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believe!
اذْكُرُواudh'kurū
Remember
نِعْمَةَniʿ'mata
(the) Favor
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
upon you
إِذْidh
when
جَاءَتْكُمْjāatkum
came to you
جُنُودٌjunūdun
(the) hosts
فَأَرْسَلْنَاfa-arsalnā
and We sent
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim
upon them
رِيحًاrīḥan
a wind
وَجُنُودًاwajunūdan
and hosts
لَمْlam
not
تَرَوْهَاtarawhā
you (could) see them.
وَكَانَwakāna
And Allah is
اللَّهُl-lahu
And Allah is
بِمَاbimā
of what
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūna
you do
بَصِيرًاbaṣīran
All-Seer.
You who believe, remember God’s goodness to you when mighty armies massed against you: We sent a violent wind and invisible forces against them. God sees all that you do.
10
إِذْidh
When
جَاءُوكُمْjāūkum
they came upon you
مِنْmin
from
فَوْقِكُمْfawqikum
above you
وَمِنْwamin
and from
أَسْفَلَasfala
below
مِنْكُمْminkum
you,
وَإِذْwa-idh
and when
زَاغَتِzāghati
grew wild
الْأَبْصَارُl-abṣāru
the eyes
وَبَلَغَتِwabalaghati
and reached
الْقُلُوبُl-qulūbu
the hearts
الْحَنَاجِرَl-ḥanājira
the throats,
وَتَظُنُّونَwataẓunnūna
and you assumed
بِاللَّهِbil-lahi
about Allah
الظُّنُونَاl-ẓunūnā
the assumptions.
They massed against you from above and below; your eyes rolled [with fear], your hearts rose into your throats, and you thought [ill] thoughts of God.
