Surah Memorizer Beta

An-Nisa'

1

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O
النَّاسُl-nāsu
mankind!
اتَّقُواittaqū
Fear
رَبَّكُمُrabbakumu
your Lord
الَّذِيalladhī
the One Who
خَلَقَكُمْkhalaqakum
created you
مِنْmin
from
نَفْسٍnafsin
a soul
وَاحِدَةٍwāḥidatin
single
وَخَلَقَwakhalaqa
and created
مِنْهَاmin'hā
from it
زَوْجَهَاzawjahā
its mate
وَبَثَّwabatha
and dispersed
مِنْهُمَاmin'humā
from both of them
رِجَالًاrijālan
many men
كَثِيرًاkathīran
many men
وَنِسَاءًwanisāan
and women.
وَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqū
And fear
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
الَّذِيalladhī
(through) Whom
تَسَاءَلُونَtasāalūna
you ask
بِهِbihi
[with it]
وَالْأَرْحَامَwal-arḥāma
and the wombs.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
كَانَkāna
is
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
over you
رَقِيبًاraqīban
Ever-Watchful.
People, be mindful of your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and from it created its mate, and from the pair of them spread countless men and women far and wide; be mindful of God, in whose name you make requests of one another. Beware of severing the ties of kinship: God is always watching over you.

2

وَءَاتُواwaātū
And give
الْيَتَامَىl-yatāmā
(to) the orphans
أَمْوَالَهُمْamwālahum
their wealth,
وَلَاwalā
and (do) not
تَتَبَدَّلُواtatabaddalū
exchange
الْخَبِيثَl-khabītha
the bad
بِالطَّيِّبِbil-ṭayibi
with the good,
وَلَاwalā
and (do) not
تَأْكُلُواtakulū
consume
أَمْوَالَهُمْamwālahum
their wealth
إِلَىilā
with
أَمْوَالِكُمْamwālikum
your wealth.
إِنَّهُinnahu
Indeed, it
كَانَkāna
is
حُوبًاḥūban
a sin
كَبِيرًاkabīran
great.
Give orphans their property, do not replace [their] good things with bad, and do not consume their property with your own- a great sin.

3

وَإِنْwa-in
And if
خِفْتُمْkhif'tum
you fear
أَلَّاallā
that not
تُقْسِطُواtuq'siṭū
you will be able to do
فِي
with
الْيَتَامَىl-yatāmā
the orphans,
فَانْكِحُواfa-inkiḥū
then marry
مَا
what
طَابَṭāba
seems suitable
لَكُمْlakum
to you
مِنَmina
from
النِّسَاءِl-nisāi
the women
مَثْنَىmathnā
two,
وَثُلَاثَwathulātha
or three,
وَرُبَاعَwarubāʿa
or four.
فَإِنْfa-in
But if
خِفْتُمْkhif'tum
you fear
أَلَّاallā
that not
تَعْدِلُواtaʿdilū
you can do justice
فَوَاحِدَةًfawāḥidatan
then (marry) one
أَوْaw
or
مَا
what
مَلَكَتْmalakat
possesses
أَيْمَانُكُمْaymānukum
your right hand.
ذَلِكَdhālika
That
أَدْنَىadnā
(is) more appropriate
أَلَّاallā
that you (may) not oppress.
تَعُولُواtaʿūlū
that you (may) not oppress.
If you fear that you will not deal fairly with orphan girls, you may marry whichever [other] women seem good to you, two, three, or four. If you fear that you cannot be equitable [to them], then marry only one, or your slave(s): that is more likely to make you avoid bias.

4

وَءَاتُواwaātū
And give
النِّسَاءَl-nisāa
the women
صَدُقَاتِهِنَّṣaduqātihinna
their dower
نِحْلَةًniḥ'latan
graciously.
فَإِنْfa-in
But if
طِبْنَṭib'na
they remit
لَكُمْlakum
to you
عَنْʿan
anything
شَيْءٍshayin
anything
مِنْهُmin'hu
of it
نَفْسًاnafsan
(on their) own,
فَكُلُوهُfakulūhu
then eat it
هَنِيئًاhanīan
(in) satisfaction
مَرِيئًاmarīan
(and) ease.
Give women their bridal gift upon marriage, though if they are happy to give up some of it for you, you may enjoy it with a clear conscience.

5

وَلَاwalā
And (do) not
تُؤْتُواtu'tū
give
السُّفَهَاءَl-sufahāa
the foolish
أَمْوَالَكُمُamwālakumu
your wealth
الَّتِيallatī
which
جَعَلَjaʿala
Allah made
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah made
لَكُمْlakum
for you
قِيَامًاqiyāman
a means of support
وَارْزُقُوهُمْwa-ur'zuqūhum
(but) provide (for) them
فِيهَاfīhā
with it
وَاكْسُوهُمْwa-ik'sūhum
and clothe them
وَقُولُواwaqūlū
and speak
لَهُمْlahum
to them
قَوْلًاqawlan
words
مَعْرُوفًاmaʿrūfan
(of) kindness.
Do not entrust your property to the feeble-minded. God has made it a means of support for you: make provision for them from it, clothe them, and address them kindly.

6

وَابْتَلُواwa-ib'talū
And test
الْيَتَامَىl-yatāmā
the orphans
حَتَّىḥattā
until
إِذَاidhā
[when]
بَلَغُواbalaghū
they reach[ed]
النِّكَاحَl-nikāḥa
(the age of) marriage,
فَإِنْfa-in
then if
ءَانَسْتُمْānastum
you perceive
مِنْهُمْmin'hum
in them
رُشْدًاrush'dan
sound judgement
فَادْفَعُواfa-id'faʿū
then deliver
إِلَيْهِمْilayhim
to them
أَمْوَالَهُمْamwālahum
their wealth.
وَلَاwalā
And (do) not
تَأْكُلُوهَاtakulūhā
eat it
إِسْرَافًاis'rāfan
extravagantly
وَبِدَارًاwabidāran
and hastily
أَنْan
(fearing) that
يَكْبَرُواyakbarū
they will grow up.
وَمَنْwaman
And whoever
كَانَkāna
is
غَنِيًّاghaniyyan
rich
فَلْيَسْتَعْفِفْfalyastaʿfif
then he should refrain,
وَمَنْwaman
and whoever
كَانَkāna
is
فَقِيرًاfaqīran
poor
فَلْيَأْكُلْfalyakul
then let him eat (of it)
بِالْمَعْرُوفِbil-maʿrūfi
in a fair manner.
فَإِذَاfa-idhā
Then when
دَفَعْتُمْdafaʿtum
you deliver
إِلَيْهِمْilayhim
to them
أَمْوَالَهُمْamwālahum
their wealth
فَأَشْهِدُواfa-ashhidū
then take witnesses
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim
on them.
وَكَفَىwakafā
And Allah is sufficient
بِاللَّهِbil-lahi
And Allah is sufficient
حَسِيبًاḥasīban
(as) a Reckoner.
Test orphans until they reach marriageable age; then, if you find they have sound judgement, hand over their property to them. Do not consume it hastily before they come of age: if the guardian is well off he should abstain from the orphan’s property, and if he is poor he should use only what is fair. When you give them their property, call witnesses in; but God takes full account of everything you do.

7

لِلرِّجَالِlilrrijāli
For the men
نَصِيبٌnaṣībun
a portion
مِمَّاmimmā
of what
تَرَكَtaraka
(is) left
الْوَالِدَانِl-wālidāni
(by) the parents,
وَالْأَقْرَبُونَwal-aqrabūna
and the near relatives
وَلِلنِّسَاءِwalilnnisāi
and for the women
نَصِيبٌnaṣībun
a portion
مِمَّاmimmā
of what
تَرَكَtaraka
(is) left
الْوَالِدَانِl-wālidāni
(by) parents
وَالْأَقْرَبُونَwal-aqrabūna
and the near relatives
مِمَّاmimmā
of what
قَلَّqalla
(is) little
مِنْهُmin'hu
of it
أَوْaw
or
كَثُرَkathura
much -
نَصِيبًاnaṣīban
a portion
مَفْرُوضًاmafrūḍan
obligatory.
Men shall have a share in what their parents and closest relatives leave, and women shall have a share in what their parents and closest relatives leave, whether the legacy be small or large: this is ordained by God.

8

وَإِذَاwa-idhā
And when
حَضَرَḥaḍara
present
الْقِسْمَةَl-qis'mata
(at) the (time of) division
أُولُواulū
the relatives
الْقُرْبَىl-qur'bā
the relatives
وَالْيَتَامَىwal-yatāmā
and the orphans
وَالْمَسَاكِينُwal-masākīnu
and the poor,
فَارْزُقُوهُمْfa-ur'zuqūhum
then provide them
مِنْهُmin'hu
from it
وَقُولُواwaqūlū
and speak
لَهُمْlahum
to them
قَوْلًاqawlan
words
مَعْرُوفًاmaʿrūfan
(of) kindness.
If other relatives, orphans, or needy people are present at the distribution, give them something too, and speak kindly to them.

9

وَلْيَخْشَwalyakhsha
And let fear -
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who,
لَوْlaw
if
تَرَكُواtarakū
they left
مِنْmin
behind
خَلْفِهِمْkhalfihim
behind
ذُرِّيَّةًdhurriyyatan
offspring
ضِعَافًاḍiʿāfan
weak
خَافُواkhāfū
(and) they would have feared
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim
about them.
فَلْيَتَّقُواfalyattaqū
So let them fear
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
وَلْيَقُولُواwalyaqūlū
and let them speak
قَوْلًاqawlan
words
سَدِيدًاsadīdan
appropriate.
Let those who would fear for the future of their own helpless children, if they were to die, show the same concern [for orphans]; let them be mindful of God and speak out for justice.

10

إِنَّinna
Indeed,
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
يَأْكُلُونَyakulūna
consume
أَمْوَالَamwāla
wealth
الْيَتَامَىl-yatāmā
(of) the orphans
ظُلْمًاẓul'man
wrongfully,
إِنَّمَاinnamā
only
يَأْكُلُونَyakulūna
they consume
فِي
in
بُطُونِهِمْbuṭūnihim
their bellies
نَارًاnāran
fire,
وَسَيَصْلَوْنَwasayaṣlawna
and they will be burned
سَعِيرًاsaʿīran
(in) a Blazing Fire.
Those who consume the property of orphans unjustly are actually swallowing fire into their own bellies: they will burn in the blazing Flame.
