1

حمhha-meem
Ha Meem.
Ha Mim

2

وَالْكِتَابِwal-kitābi
By the Book
الْمُبِينِl-mubīni
the clear,
By the Scripture that makes things clear,

3

إِنَّاinnā
Indeed, We
جَعَلْنَاهُjaʿalnāhu
(have) made it
قُرْءَانًاqur'ānan
a Quran
عَرَبِيًّاʿarabiyyan
(in) Arabic
لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakum
so that you may
تَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūna
understand.
We have made it a Quran in Arabic so that you [people] may understand.

4

وَإِنَّهُwa-innahu
And indeed, it
فِيfī
(is) in
أُمِّummi
(the) Mother
الْكِتَابِl-kitābi
(of) the Book
لَدَيْنَاladaynā
with Us,
لَعَلِيٌّlaʿaliyyun
surely exalted,
حَكِيمٌḥakīmun
full of wisdom.
It is truly exalted in the Source of Scripture kept with Us, and full of wisdom.

أَفَنَضْرِبُafanaḍribu
Then should We take away
عَنْكُمُʿankumu
from you
الذِّكْرَl-dhik'ra
the Reminder,
صَفْحًاṣafḥan
disregarding (you),
أَنْan
because
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you are
قَوْمًاqawman
a people
مُسْرِفِينَmus'rifīna
transgressing?
Should We ignore you and turn this revelation away from you because you are insolent people?

وَكَمْwakam
And how many
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnā
And how many
مِنْmin
We sent
نَبِيٍّnabiyyin
a Prophet
فِيfī
among
الْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna
the former (people),
We have sent many a prophet to earlier people

7

وَمَاwamā
And not
يَأْتِيهِمْyatīhim
came to them
مِنْmin
any Prophet
نَبِيٍّnabiyyin
any Prophet
إِلَّاillā
but
كَانُواkānū
they used to
بِهِbihi
mock at him.
يَسْتَهْزِءُونَyastahziūna
mock at him.
and they mocked every one of them,

فَأَهْلَكْنَاfa-ahlaknā
Then We destroyed
أَشَدَّashadda
stronger
مِنْهُمْmin'hum
than them
بَطْشًاbaṭshan
(in) power
وَمَضَىwamaḍā
and has passed
مَثَلُmathalu
(the) example
الْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna
(of) the former (people).
so We have destroyed mightier people than [the disbelievers of Mecca] and their example has gone down in history.

وَلَئِنْwala-in
And if
سَأَلْتَهُمْsa-altahum
you ask them,
مَنْman
"Who
خَلَقَkhalaqa
created
السَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwāti
the heavens
وَالْأَرْضَwal-arḍa
and the earth?"
لَيَقُولُنَّlayaqūlunna
They will surely say,
خَلَقَهُنَّkhalaqahunna
"Created them
الْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzu
the All-Mighty,
الْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmu
the All-Knower,"
If you [Prophet] ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and earth?’ they are sure to say, ‘They were created by the Almighty, the All Knowing.’

الَّذِيalladhī
The One Who
جَعَلَjaʿala
made
لَكُمُlakumu
for you
الْأَرْضَl-arḍa
the earth
مَهْدًاmahdan
a bed,
وَجَعَلَwajaʿala
and made
لَكُمْlakum
for you
فِيهَاfīhā
therein
سُبُلًاsubulan
roads
لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakum
so that you may
تَهْتَدُونَtahtadūna
(be) guided,
It is He who smoothed out the earth for you and traced out routes on it for you to find your way,
