Surah Memorizer Beta

Al-Ma'idah

1

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O you
الَّذِينَalladhīna
who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believe!
أَوْفُواawfū
Fulfil
بِالْعُقُودِbil-ʿuqūdi
the contracts.
أُحِلَّتْuḥillat
Are made lawful
لَكُمْlakum
for you
بَهِيمَةُbahīmatu
the quadruped
الْأَنْعَامِl-anʿāmi
(of) the grazing livestock
إِلَّاillā
except
مَا
what
يُتْلَىyut'lā
is recited
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
on you,
غَيْرَghayra
not
مُحِلِّيmuḥillī
being permitted
الصَّيْدِl-ṣaydi
(to) hunt
وَأَنْتُمْwa-antum
while you
حُرُمٌḥurumun
(are in) Ihram.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
يَحْكُمُyaḥkumu
decrees
مَا
what
يُرِيدُyurīdu
He wills.
You who believe, fulfil your obligations. Livestock animals are lawful as food for you, with the exception of what is about to be announced to you. You are forbidden to kill game while you are on pilgrimage––God commands what He will,

2

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O you
الَّذِينَalladhīna
who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believe!
لَا
(Do) not
تُحِلُّواtuḥillū
violate
شَعَائِرَshaʿāira
(the) rites
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah,
وَلَاwalā
and not
الشَّهْرَl-shahra
the sacred month
الْحَرَامَl-ḥarāma
the sacred month
وَلَاwalā
and not
الْهَدْيَl-hadya
the sacrificial animals
وَلَاwalā
and not
الْقَلَائِدَl-qalāida
the garlanded
وَلَاwalā
and not
ءَامِّينَāmmīna
(those) coming
الْبَيْتَl-bayta
(to) the Sacred House
الْحَرَامَl-ḥarāma
(to) the Sacred House
يَبْتَغُونَyabtaghūna
seeking
فَضْلًاfaḍlan
Bounty
مِنْmin
of
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim
their Lord
وَرِضْوَانًاwariḍ'wānan
and good pleasure.
وَإِذَاwa-idhā
And when
حَلَلْتُمْḥalaltum
you come out of Ihram
فَاصْطَادُواfa-iṣ'ṭādū
then (you may) hunt.
وَلَاwalā
And let not incite you
يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْyajrimannakum
And let not incite you
شَنَءَانُshanaānu
(the) hatred
قَوْمٍqawmin
(for) a people
أَنْan
as
صَدُّوكُمْṣaddūkum
they stopped you
عَنِʿani
from
الْمَسْجِدِl-masjidi
Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
الْحَرَامِl-ḥarāmi
Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
أَنْan
that
تَعْتَدُواtaʿtadū
you commit transgression.
وَتَعَاوَنُواwataʿāwanū
And help one another
عَلَىʿalā
in
الْبِرِّl-biri
[the] righteousness
وَالتَّقْوَىwal-taqwā
and [the] piety,
وَلَاwalā
but (do) not
تَعَاوَنُواtaʿāwanū
help one another
عَلَىʿalā
in
الْإِثْمِl-ith'mi
[the] sin
وَالْعُدْوَانِwal-ʿud'wāni
and [the] transgression.
وَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqū
And fear
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah;
إِنَّinna
indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
شَدِيدُshadīdu
(is) severe
الْعِقَابِl-ʿiqābi
(in) [the] punishment.
so, you who believe, do not violate the sanctity of God’s rites, the Sacred Month, the offerings, their garlands, nor those going to the Sacred House to seek the bounty and pleasure of their Lord––but when you have completed the rites of pilgrimage you may hunt. Do not let your hatred for the people who barred you from the Sacred Mosque induce you to break the law: help one another to do what is right and good; do not help one another towards sin and hostility. Be mindful of God, for His punishment is severe.

3

حُرِّمَتْḥurrimat
Are made unlawful
عَلَيْكُمُʿalaykumu
on you
الْمَيْتَةُl-maytatu
the dead animals,
وَالدَّمُwal-damu
and the blood,
وَلَحْمُwalaḥmu
and flesh
الْخِنْزِيرِl-khinzīri
(of) the swine,
وَمَاwamā
and what
أُهِلَّuhilla
has been dedicated
لِغَيْرِlighayri
to other than
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah,
بِهِbihi
[on it],
وَالْمُنْخَنِقَةُwal-mun'khaniqatu
and that which is strangled (to death),
وَالْمَوْقُوذَةُwal-mawqūdhatu
and that which is hit fatally,
وَالْمُتَرَدِّيَةُwal-mutaradiyatu
and that which has a fatal fall,
وَالنَّطِيحَةُwal-naṭīḥatu
and that which is gored by horns,
وَمَاwamā
and that which
أَكَلَakala
ate (it)
السَّبُعُl-sabuʿu
the wild animal
إِلَّاillā
except
مَا
what
ذَكَّيْتُمْdhakkaytum
you slaughtered,
وَمَاwamā
and what
ذُبِحَdhubiḥa
is sacrificed
عَلَىʿalā
on
النُّصُبِl-nuṣubi
the stone altars,
وَأَنْwa-an
and that
تَسْتَقْسِمُواtastaqsimū
you seek division
بِالْأَزْلَامِbil-azlāmi
by divining arrows -
ذَلِكُمْdhālikum
that
فِسْقٌfis'qun
(is) grave disobedience.
الْيَوْمَl-yawma
This day
يَئِسَya-isa
(have) despaired
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
كَفَرُواkafarū
disbelieved
مِنْmin
of
دِينِكُمْdīnikum
your religion,
فَلَاfalā
so (do) not
تَخْشَوْهُمْtakhshawhum
fear them,
وَاخْشَوْنِwa-ikh'shawni
but fear Me.
الْيَوْمَl-yawma
This day
أَكْمَلْتُakmaltu
I have perfected
لَكُمْlakum
for you
دِينَكُمْdīnakum
your religion
وَأَتْمَمْتُwa-atmamtu
and I have completed
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
upon you
نِعْمَتِيniʿ'matī
My Favor
وَرَضِيتُwaraḍītu
and I have approved
لَكُمُlakumu
for you
الْإِسْلَامَl-is'lāma
[the] Islam
دِينًاdīnan
(as) a religion.
فَمَنِfamani
But whoever
اضْطُرَّuḍ'ṭurra
(is) forced
فِي
by
مَخْمَصَةٍmakhmaṣatin
hunger
غَيْرَghayra
(and) not
مُتَجَانِفٍmutajānifin
inclining
لِإِثْمٍli-ith'min
to sin,
فَإِنَّfa-inna
then indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
غَفُورٌghafūrun
(is) Oft-Forgiving,
رَحِيمٌraḥīmun
Most Merciful.
You are forbidden to eat carrion; blood; pig’s meat; any animal over which any name other than God’s has been invoked; any animal strangled, or victim of a violent blow or a fall, or gored or savaged by a beast of prey, unless you still slaughter it [in the correct manner]; or anything sacrificed on idolatrous altars. You are also forbidden to allot shares [of meat] by drawing marked arrows -a heinous practice- today the disbelievers have lost all hope that you will give up your religion. Do not fear them: fear Me. Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My blessing upon you, and chosen as your religion islam: [total devotion to God]; but if any of you is forced by hunger to eat forbidden food, with no intention of doing wrong, then God is most forgiving and merciful.

4

يَسْءَلُونَكَyasalūnaka
They ask you
مَاذَاmādhā
what
أُحِلَّuḥilla
(is) made lawful
لَهُمْlahum
for them.
قُلْqul
Say,
أُحِلَّuḥilla
"Are made lawful
لَكُمُlakumu
for you
الطَّيِّبَاتُl-ṭayibātu
the good things
وَمَاwamā
and what
عَلَّمْتُمْʿallamtum
you have taught
مِنَmina
(your) hunting animals,
الْجَوَارِحِl-jawāriḥi
(your) hunting animals,
مُكَلِّبِينَmukallibīna
ones who train animals to hunt,
تُعَلِّمُونَهُنَّtuʿallimūnahunna
you teach them
مِمَّاmimmā
of what
عَلَّمَكُمُʿallamakumu
Allah has taught you.
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah has taught you.
فَكُلُواfakulū
So eat
مِمَّاmimmā
of what
أَمْسَكْنَamsakna
they catch
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
for you,
وَاذْكُرُواwa-udh'kurū
but mention
اسْمَis'ma
(the) name
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah
عَلَيْهِʿalayhi
on it,
وَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqū
and fear
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
سَرِيعُsarīʿu
is swift
الْحِسَابِl-ḥisābi
(in taking) account.
They ask you, Prophet, what is lawful for them. Say, ‘All good things are lawful for you.’ [This includes] what you have taught your birds and beasts of prey to catch, teaching them as God has taught you, so eat what they catch for you, but first pronounce God’s name over it. Be mindful of God: He is swift to take account.

5

الْيَوْمَal-yawma
This day
أُحِلَّuḥilla
are made lawful
لَكُمُlakumu
for you
الطَّيِّبَاتُl-ṭayibātu
the good things;
وَطَعَامُwaṭaʿāmu
and (the) food
الَّذِينَalladhīna
(of) those who
أُوتُواūtū
were given
الْكِتَابَl-kitāba
the Book
حِلٌّḥillun
(is) lawful
لَكُمْlakum
for you,
وَطَعَامُكُمْwaṭaʿāmukum
and your food
حِلٌّḥillun
(is) lawful
لَهُمْlahum
for them.
وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُwal-muḥ'ṣanātu
And the chaste women
مِنَmina
from
الْمُؤْمِنَاتِl-mu'mināti
the believers
وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُwal-muḥ'ṣanātu
and the chaste women
مِنَmina
from
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
أُوتُواūtū
were given
الْكِتَابَl-kitāba
the Book
مِنْmin
before you,
قَبْلِكُمْqablikum
before you,
إِذَاidhā
when
ءَاتَيْتُمُوهُنَّātaytumūhunna
you have given them
أُجُورَهُنَّujūrahunna
their bridal due,
مُحْصِنِينَmuḥ'ṣinīna
being chaste
غَيْرَghayra
not
مُسَافِحِينَmusāfiḥīna
being lewd
وَلَاwalā
and not
مُتَّخِذِيmuttakhidhī
ones (who are) taking
أَخْدَانٍakhdānin
secret lovers.
وَمَنْwaman
And whoever
يَكْفُرْyakfur
denies
بِالْإِيمَانِbil-īmāni
the faith -
فَقَدْfaqad
then surely
حَبِطَḥabiṭa
(are) wasted
عَمَلُهُʿamaluhu
his deeds
وَهُوَwahuwa
and he,
فِي
in
الْءَاخِرَةِl-ākhirati
the Hereafter,
مِنَmina
(will be) among
الْخَاسِرِينَl-khāsirīna
the losers.
Today all good things have been made lawful for you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful for you as your food is lawful for them. So are chaste, believing, women as well as chaste women of the people who were given the Scripture before you, as long as you have given them their bride-gifts and married them, not taking them as lovers or secret mistresses. The deeds of anyone who rejects faith will come to nothing, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.

6

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O you
الَّذِينَalladhīna
who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believe!
إِذَاidhā
When
قُمْتُمْqum'tum
you stand up
إِلَىilā
for
الصَّلَوةِl-ṣalati
the prayer,
فَاغْسِلُواfa-igh'silū
then wash
وُجُوهَكُمْwujūhakum
your faces
وَأَيْدِيَكُمْwa-aydiyakum
and your hands
إِلَىilā
till
الْمَرَافِقِl-marāfiqi
the elbows
وَامْسَحُواwa-im'saḥū
and wipe
بِرُءُوسِكُمْbiruūsikum
your heads
وَأَرْجُلَكُمْwa-arjulakum
and your feet
إِلَىilā
till
الْكَعْبَيْنِl-kaʿbayni
the ankles.
وَإِنْwa-in
But if
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you are
جُنُبًاjunuban
(in) a state of ceremonial impurity
فَاطَّهَّرُواfa-iṭṭahharū
then purify yourselves.
وَإِنْwa-in
But if
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you are
مَرْضَىmarḍā
ill
أَوْaw
or
عَلَىʿalā
on
سَفَرٍsafarin
a journey
أَوْaw
or

has come
أَحَدٌaḥadun
anyone
مِنْكُمْminkum
of you
مِنَmina
from
الْغَائِطِl-ghāiṭi
the toilet

or
لَامَسْتُمُlāmastumu

فَلَمْfalam
and not
تَجِدُواtajidū
you find

فَتَيَمَّمُواfatayammamū
then do
صَعِيدًاṣaʿīdan
(with) earth
طَيِّبًاṭayyiban
clean,
فَامْسَحُواfa-im'saḥū
then wipe
بِوُجُوهِكُمْbiwujūhikum
your faces
وَأَيْدِيكُمْwa-aydīkum
and your hands
مِنْهُmin'hu
with it.
مَا
Allah (does) not intend
يُرِيدُyurīdu
Allah (does) not intend
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah (does) not intend
لِيَجْعَلَliyajʿala
to make
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
for you
مِنْmin
any
حَرَجٍḥarajin
difficulty
وَلَكِنْwalākin
but
يُرِيدُyurīdu
He intends
لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْliyuṭahhirakum
to purify you
وَلِيُتِمَّwaliyutimma
and to complete
نِعْمَتَهُniʿ'matahu
His Favor
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
upon you
لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakum
so that you may
تَشْكُرُونَtashkurūna
(be) grateful.
You who believe, when you are about to pray, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, wash your feet up to the ankles and, if required, wash your whole body. If any of you is sick or on a journey, or has just relieved himself, or had intimate contact with a woman, and can find no water, then take some clean sand and wipe your face and hands with it. God does not wish to place any burden on you: He only wishes to cleanse you and perfect His blessing on you, so that you may be thankful.

7

وَاذْكُرُواwa-udh'kurū
And remember
نِعْمَةَniʿ'mata
(the) Favor
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
upon you
وَمِيثَاقَهُwamīthāqahu
and His covenant
الَّذِيalladhī
which
وَاثَقَكُمْwāthaqakum
He bound you
بِهِbihi
with [it]
إِذْidh
when
قُلْتُمْqul'tum
you said,
سَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nā
"We heard
وَأَطَعْنَاwa-aṭaʿnā
and we obeyed;"
وَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqū
and fear
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
عَلِيمٌʿalīmun
(is) All-Knower
بِذَاتِbidhāti
of what
الصُّدُورِl-ṣudūri
(is in) the breasts.
Remember God’s blessing on you and the pledge with which you were bound when you said, ‘We hear and we obey.’ Be mindful of God: God has full knowledge of the secrets of the heart.

8

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O you
الَّذِينَalladhīna
who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believe!
كُونُواkūnū
Be
قَوَّامِينَqawwāmīna
steadfast
لِلَّهِlillahi
for Allah
شُهَدَاءَshuhadāa
(as) witnesses
بِالْقِسْطِbil-qis'ṭi
in justice,
وَلَاwalā
and let not prevent you
يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْyajrimannakum
and let not prevent you
شَنَءَانُshanaānu
hatred
قَوْمٍqawmin
(of) a people
عَلَىʿalā
[upon]
أَلَّاallā
that not
تَعْدِلُواtaʿdilū
you do justice.
اعْدِلُواiʿ'dilū
Be just
هُوَhuwa
it
أَقْرَبُaqrabu
(is) nearer
لِلتَّقْوَىlilttaqwā
to [the] piety.
وَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqū
And fear
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah;
إِنَّinna
indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
خَبِيرٌkhabīrun
(is) All-Aware
بِمَاbimā
of what
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūna
you do.
You who believe, be steadfast in your devotion to God and bear witness impartially: do not let hatred of others lead you away from justice, but adhere to justice, for that is closer to awareness of God. Be mindful of God: God is well aware of all that you do.

9

وَعَدَwaʿada
Allah has promised
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah has promised

the righteous deeds -
لَهُمْlahum
for them
مَغْفِرَةٌmaghfiratun
(is) forgiveness
وَأَجْرٌwa-ajrun
and a reward
عَظِيمٌʿaẓīmun
great.
God has promised forgiveness and a rich reward to those who have faith and do good works;

10

وَالَّذِينَwa-alladhīna
And those who
كَفَرُواkafarū
disbelieve
وَكَذَّبُواwakadhabū
and deny

Our Signs -
أُولَئِكَulāika
those
أَصْحَابُaṣḥābu
(are the) companions
الْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmi
(of) the Hellfire.
those who reject faith and deny Our revelations will inhabit the blazing Fire.
