قَدْqad
Indeed,
سَمِعَsamiʿa
Allah has heard
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah has heard
قَوْلَqawla
(the) speech
الَّتِيallatī
(of one) who
تُجَادِلُكَtujādiluka
disputes with you
فِيfī
concerning
زَوْجِهَاzawjihā
her husband
وَتَشْتَكِيwatashtakī
and she directs her complaint
إِلَىilā
to
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah.
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
يَسْمَعُyasmaʿu
hears
تَحَاوُرَكُمَاtaḥāwurakumā
(the) dialogue of both of you.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
سَمِيعٌsamīʿun
(is) All-Hearer,
بَصِيرٌbaṣīrun
All-Seer.
God has heard the words of the woman who disputed with you [Prophet] about her husband and complained to God: God has heard what you both had to say. He is all hearing, all seeing.
2
الَّذِينَalladhīna
Those who
يُظَاهِرُونَyuẓāhirūna
pronounce zihar
مِنْكُمْminkum
among you
مِنْmin
[from]
نِسَائِهِمْnisāihim
(to) their wives,
مَاmā
not
هُنَّhunna
they
أُمَّهَاتِهِمْummahātihim
(are) their mothers.
إِنْin
Not
أُمَّهَاتُهُمْummahātuhum
(are) their mothers
إِلَّاillā
except
اللَّائِيallāī
those who
وَلَدْنَهُمْwaladnahum
gave them
وَإِنَّهُمْwa-innahum
And indeed, they
لَيَقُولُونَlayaqūlūna
surely say
مُنْكَرًاmunkaran
an evil
مِنَmina
[of]
الْقَوْلِl-qawli
[the] word
وَزُورًاwazūran
and a lie.
وَإِنَّwa-inna
But indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
لَعَفُوٌّlaʿafuwwun
(is) surely, Oft-Pardoning,
غَفُورٌghafūrun
Oft-Forgiving.
Even if any of you say to their wives, ‘You are to me like my mother’s back,’they are not their mothers; their only mothers are those who gave birth to them. What they say is certainly blameworthy and false, but God is pardoning and forgiving.
3
وَالَّذِينَwa-alladhīna
And those who
يُظَاهِرُونَyuẓāhirūna
pronounce zihar
مِنْmin
[from]
نِسَائِهِمْnisāihim
(to) their wives
ثُمَّthumma
then
يَعُودُونَyaʿūdūna
go back
لِمَاlimā
on what
قَالُواqālū
they said,
فَتَحْرِيرُfataḥrīru
then freeing
رَقَبَةٍraqabatin
(of) a slave
مِنْmin
before
قَبْلِqabli
before
أَنْan
[that]
يَتَمَاسَّاyatamāssā
they touch each other.
ذَلِكُمْdhālikum
That
تُوعَظُونَtūʿaẓūna
you are admonished
بِهِbihi
to it.
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
بِمَاbimā
of what
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūna
you do
خَبِيرٌkhabīrun
(is) All-Aware.
Those of you who say such a thing to their wives, then go back on what they have said, must free a slave before the couple may touch one another again––this is what you are commanded to do, and God is fully aware of what you do––
4
فَمَنْfaman
Then whoever
لَمْlam
(does) not
يَجِدْyajid
find,
فَصِيَامُfaṣiyāmu
then fasting
شَهْرَيْنِshahrayni
(for) two months
مُتَتَابِعَيْنِmutatābiʿayni
consecutively
مِنْmin
before
قَبْلِqabli
before
أَنْan
[that]
يَتَمَاسَّاyatamāssā
they both touch each other.
فَمَنْfaman
But (he) who
لَمْlam
not
يَسْتَطِعْyastaṭiʿ
is able
فَإِطْعَامُfa-iṭ'ʿāmu
then (the) feeding
سِتِّينَsittīna
(of) sixty
مِسْكِينًاmis'kīnan
needy one(s).
ذَلِكَdhālika
That -
لِتُؤْمِنُواlitu'minū
so that you may believe
بِاللَّهِbil-lahi
in Allah
وَرَسُولِهِwarasūlihi
and His Messenger,
وَتِلْكَwatil'ka
and these
حُدُودُḥudūdu
(are the) limits
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah,
وَلِلْكَافِرِينَwalil'kāfirīna
and for the disbelievers
عَذَابٌʿadhābun
(is) a punishment
أَلِيمٌalīmun
painful.
but anyone who does not have the means should fast continuously for two months before they touch each other, and anyone unable to do this should feed sixty needy people. This is so that you may [truly] have faith in God and His Messenger. These are the bounds set by God: grievous torment awaits those who ignore them.
5
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
يُحَادُّونَyuḥāddūna
oppose
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُwarasūlahu
and His Messenger
كُبِتُواkubitū
(will) be disgraced
كَمَاkamā
as
كُبِتَkubita
were disgraced
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those
مِنْmin
before them.
قَبْلِهِمْqablihim
before them.
وَقَدْwaqad
And certainly
أَنْزَلْنَاanzalnā
We have sent down
ءَايَاتٍāyātin
Verses
بَيِّنَاتٍbayyinātin
clear.
وَلِلْكَافِرِينَwalil'kāfirīna
And for the disbelievers
عَذَابٌʿadhābun
(is) a punishment
مُهِينٌmuhīnun
humiliating.
Those who oppose God and His Messenger will be brought low, like those before them: We have revealed clear messages, and humiliating torment awaits those who ignore them,
6
يَوْمَyawma
(On the) Day
يَبْعَثُهُمُyabʿathuhumu
(when) Allah will raise them
اللَّهُl-lahu
(when) Allah will raise them
جَمِيعًاjamīʿan
all
فَيُنَبِّئُهُمْfayunabbi-uhum
and inform them
بِمَاbimā
of what
عَمِلُواʿamilū
they did.
أَحْصَاهُaḥṣāhu
Allah has recorded it
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah has recorded it
وَنَسُوهُwanasūhu
while they forgot it.
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
عَلَىʿalā
(is) over
كُلِّkulli
all
شَيْءٍshayin
things
شَهِيدٌshahīdun
a Witness.
on the Day when God will raise everyone and make them aware of what they have done. God has taken account of it all, though they may have forgotten: He witnesses everything.
7
أَلَمْalam
Do not
تَرَtara
you see
أَنَّanna
that
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
يَعْلَمُyaʿlamu
knows
مَاmā
whatever
فِيfī
(is) in
السَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwāti
the heavens
وَمَاwamā
and whatever
فِيfī
(is) in
الْأَرْضِl-arḍi
the earth?
مَاmā
Not
يَكُونُyakūnu
there is
مِنْmin
any
نَجْوَىnajwā
secret counsel
ثَلَاثَةٍthalāthatin
(of) three
إِلَّاillā
but
هُوَhuwa
He (is)
رَابِعُهُمْrābiʿuhum
(the) fourth of them,
وَلَاwalā
and not
خَمْسَةٍkhamsatin
five
إِلَّاillā
but
هُوَhuwa
He (is)
سَادِسُهُمْsādisuhum
(the) sixth of them,
وَلَاwalā
and not
أَدْنَىadnā
less
مِنْmin
than
ذَلِكَdhālika
that
وَلَاwalā
and not
أَكْثَرَakthara
more
إِلَّاillā
but
هُوَhuwa
He
مَعَهُمْmaʿahum
(is) with them
أَيْنَayna
wherever
مَاmā
wherever
كَانُواkānū
they are.
ثُمَّthumma
Then
يُنَبِّئُهُمْyunabbi-uhum
He will inform them
بِمَاbimā
of what
عَمِلُواʿamilū
they did
يَوْمَyawma
(on the) Day
الْقِيَامَةِl-qiyāmati
(of) the Resurrection.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
بِكُلِّbikulli
of every
شَيْءٍshayin
thing
عَلِيمٌʿalīmun
(is) All-Knower.
Do you not see [Prophet] that God knows everything in the heavens and earth? There is no secret conversation between three people where He is not the fourth, nor between five where He is not the sixth, nor between less or more than that without Him being with them, wherever they may be. On the Day of Resurrection, He will show them what they have done: God truly has full knowledge of everything.
8
أَلَمْalam
Do not
تَرَtara
you see
إِلَىilā
[to]
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
نُهُواnuhū
were forbidden
عَنِʿani
from
النَّجْوَىl-najwā
secret counsels,
ثُمَّthumma
then
يَعُودُونَyaʿūdūna
they return
لِمَاlimā
to what
نُهُواnuhū
they were forbidden
عَنْهُʿanhu
from [t],
وَيَتَنَاجَوْنَwayatanājawna
and they hold secret counsels
بِالْإِثْمِbil-ith'mi
for sin
وَالْعُدْوَانِwal-ʿud'wāni
and aggression
وَمَعْصِيَتِwamaʿṣiyati
and disobedience
الرَّسُولِl-rasūli
(to) the Messenger?
وَإِذَاwa-idhā
And when
جَاءُوكَjāūka
they come to you,
حَيَّوْكَḥayyawka
they greet you
بِمَاbimā
with what
لَمْlam
not
يُحَيِّكَyuḥayyika
greets you
بِهِbihi
therewith
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah,
وَيَقُولُونَwayaqūlūna
and they say
فِيfī
among
أَنْفُسِهِمْanfusihim
themselves,
لَوْلَاlawlā
"Why (does) not
يُعَذِّبُنَاyuʿadhibunā
Allah punish us
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah punish us
بِمَاbimā
for what
نَقُولُnaqūlu
we say?"
حَسْبُهُمْḥasbuhum
Sufficient (for) them
جَهَنَّمُjahannamu
(is) Hell,
يَصْلَوْنَهَاyaṣlawnahā
they will burn in it
فَبِئْسَfabi'sa
and worst is
الْمَصِيرُl-maṣīru
the destination.
Have you not seen how those who have been forbidden to hold secret conversations go back afterwards and hold them, and conspire with one another in what is sinful, hostile, and disobedient to the Messenger? When they come to you they greet you with words God has never used to greet you, and say inwardly, ‘Why does God not punish us for what we say?’ Hell will be punishment enough for them: they will burn there- an evil destination.
9
يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O you who believe!
الَّذِينَalladhīna
O you who believe!
ءَامَنُواāmanū
O you who believe!
إِذَاidhā
When
تَنَاجَيْتُمْtanājaytum
you hold secret counsel
فَلَاfalā
then (do) not
تَتَنَاجَوْاtatanājaw
hold secret counsel
بِالْإِثْمِbil-ith'mi
for sin
وَالْعُدْوَانِwal-ʿud'wāni
and aggression
وَمَعْصِيَتِwamaʿṣiyati
and disobedience
الرَّسُولِl-rasūli
(to) the Messenger,
وَتَنَاجَوْاwatanājaw
but hold secret counsel
بِالْبِرِّbil-biri
for righteousness
وَالتَّقْوَىwal-taqwā
and piety.
وَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqū
And fear
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah,
الَّذِيalladhī
the One Who,
إِلَيْهِilayhi
to Him
تُحْشَرُونَtuḥ'sharūna
you will be gathered.
You who believe, when you converse in secret, do not do so in a way that is sinful, hostile, and disobedient to the Messenger, but in a way that is good and mindful [of God]. Be mindful of God, to whom you will all be gathered.
10
إِنَّمَاinnamā
Only
النَّجْوَىl-najwā
the secret counsels
مِنَmina
(are) from
الشَّيْطَانِl-shayṭāni
the Shaitaan
لِيَحْزُنَliyaḥzuna
that he may grieve
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believe,
وَلَيْسَwalaysa
but not
بِضَارِّهِمْbiḍārrihim
he (can) harm them
شَيْئًاshayan
(in) anything
إِلَّاillā
except
بِإِذْنِbi-idh'ni
by Allah's permission.
اللَّهِl-lahi
by Allah's permission.
وَعَلَىwaʿalā
And upon
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِfalyatawakkali
let put (their) trust
الْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūna
the believers.
[Any other kind of] secret conversation is the work of Satan, designed to cause trouble to the believers, though it cannot harm them in the least unless God permits it. Let the believers put their trust in God.
