سَبَّحَsabbaḥa
Glorifies
لِلَّهِlillahi
[to] Allah
مَاmā
whatever
فِيfī
(is) in
السَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwāti
the heavens
وَمَاwamā
and whatever
فِيfī
(is) in
الْأَرْضِl-arḍi
the earth.
وَهُوَwahuwa
And He
الْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzu
(is) the All-Mighty,
الْحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmu
the All-Wise.
Everything in the heavens and earth glorifies God; He is the Almighty, the Wise.
2
هُوَhuwa
He
الَّذِيalladhī
(is) the One Who
أَخْرَجَakhraja
expelled
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
كَفَرُواkafarū
disbelieved
مِنْmin
from
أَهْلِahli
(the) People
الْكِتَابِl-kitābi
(of) the Scripture
مِنْmin
from
دِيَارِهِمْdiyārihim
their homes
لِأَوَّلِli-awwali
at (the) first
الْحَشْرِl-ḥashri
gathering.
مَاmā
Not
ظَنَنْتُمْẓanantum
you think
أَنْan
that
يَخْرُجُواyakhrujū
they would leave,
وَظَنُّواwaẓannū
and they thought
أَنَّهُمْannahum
that [they]
مَانِعَتُهُمْmāniʿatuhum
would defend them
حُصُونُهُمْḥuṣūnuhum
their fortresses
مِنَmina
against
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah.
فَأَتَاهُمُfa-atāhumu
But Allah came to them
اللَّهُl-lahu
But Allah came to them
مِنْmin
from
حَيْثُḥaythu
where
لَمْlam
not
يَحْتَسِبُواyaḥtasibū
they expected,
وَقَذَفَwaqadhafa
and He cast
فِيfī
into
قُلُوبِهِمُqulūbihimu
their hearts
الرُّعْبَl-ruʿ'ba
[the] terror,
يُخْرِبُونَyukh'ribūna
they destroyed
بُيُوتَهُمْbuyūtahum
their houses
بِأَيْدِيهِمْbi-aydīhim
with their hands
وَأَيْدِيwa-aydī
and the hands
الْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīna
(of) the believers.
فَاعْتَبِرُواfa-iʿ'tabirū
So take a lesson,
يَاأُولِيyāulī
O those endowed with
الْأَبْصَارِl-abṣāri
O those endowed with
It was He who drove those of the People of the Book who broke faith out from their homes at the first gathering of forces––you [believers] never thought they would go, and they themselves thought their fortifications would protect them against God. God came up on them from where they least expected and put panic into their hearts: their homes were destroyed by their own hands, and the hands of the believers. Learn from this, all of you with insight!

وَلَوْلَاwalawlā
And if not
أَنْan
[that]
كَتَبَkataba
Allah (had) decreed
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah (had) decreed
عَلَيْهِمُʿalayhimu
for them
الْجَلَاءَl-jalāa
the exile,
لَعَذَّبَهُمْlaʿadhabahum
certainly He (would) have punished them
فِيfī
in
الدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā
the world,
وَلَهُمْwalahum
and for them
فِيfī
in
الْءَاخِرَةِl-ākhirati
the Hereafter
عَذَابُʿadhābu
(is) a punishment
النَّارِl-nāri
(of) the Fire.
If God had not decreed exile for them, He would have tormented them [even more severely] in this world. In the Hereafter they will have the torment of the Fire
4
ذَلِكَdhālika
That
بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahum
(is) because [they]
شَاقُّواshāqqū
they opposed
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُwarasūlahu
and His Messenger.
وَمَنْwaman
And whoever
يُشَاقِّyushāqqi
opposes
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
فَإِنَّfa-inna
then indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
شَدِيدُshadīdu
(is) severe
الْعِقَابِl-ʿiqābi
(in) penalty.
because they set themselves against God and His Messenger: God is stern in punishment towards anyone who sets himself against Him.
5
مَاmā
Whatever
قَطَعْتُمْqaṭaʿtum
you cut down
مِنْmin
of
لِينَةٍlīnatin
(the) palm-trees
أَوْaw
or
تَرَكْتُمُوهَاtaraktumūhā
you left them
قَائِمَةًqāimatan
standing
عَلَىʿalā
on
أُصُولِهَاuṣūlihā
their roots,
فَبِإِذْنِfabi-idh'ni
it (was) by the permission
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah,
وَلِيُخْزِيَwaliyukh'ziya
and that He may disgrace
الْفَاسِقِينَl-fāsiqīna
the defiantly disobedient.
Whatever you [believers] may have done to [their] palm trees–– cutting them down or leaving them standing on their roots––was done by God’s leave, so that He might disgrace those who defied Him.
6
وَمَاwamā
And what
أَفَاءَafāa
Allah restored
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah restored
عَلَىʿalā
to
رَسُولِهِrasūlihi
His Messenger
مِنْهُمْmin'hum
from them,
فَمَاfamā
then not
أَوْجَفْتُمْawjaftum
you made expedition
عَلَيْهِʿalayhi
for it
مِنْmin
of
خَيْلٍkhaylin
horses
وَلَاwalā
and not
رِكَابٍrikābin
camels,
وَلَكِنَّwalākinna
but
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
يُسَلِّطُyusalliṭu
gives power
رُسُلَهُrusulahu
(to) His Messengers
عَلَىʿalā
over
مَنْman
whom
يَشَاءُyashāu
He wills.
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
عَلَىʿalā
(is) on
كُلِّkulli
every
شَيْءٍshayin
thing
قَدِيرٌqadīrun
All-Powerful.
You [believers] did not have to spur on your horses or your camels for whatever gains God turned over to His Messenger from them. God gives authority to His messengers over whoever He will: God has power over all things.
7
مَاmā
What
أَفَاءَafāa
Allah restored
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah restored
عَلَىʿalā
to
رَسُولِهِrasūlihi
His Messenger
مِنْmin
from
أَهْلِahli
(the) people
الْقُرَىl-qurā
(of) the towns,
فَلِلَّهِfalillahi
(it is) for Allah
وَلِلرَّسُولِwalilrrasūli
and His Messenger
وَلِذِيwalidhī
and for the kindred
الْقُرْبَىl-qur'bā
and for the kindred
وَالْيَتَامَىwal-yatāmā
and the orphans
وَالْمَسَاكِينِwal-masākīni
and the needy
وَابْنِwa-ib'ni
and the wayfarer,
السَّبِيلِl-sabīli
and the wayfarer,
كَيْkay
that
لَاlā
not
يَكُونَyakūna
it becomes
دُولَةًdūlatan
a (perpetual) circulation
بَيْنَbayna
between
الْأَغْنِيَاءِl-aghniyāi
the rich
مِنْكُمْminkum
among you.
وَمَاwamā
And whatever
ءَاتَاكُمُātākumu
gives you
الرَّسُولُl-rasūlu
the Messenger,
فَخُذُوهُfakhudhūhu
take it
وَمَاwamā
and whatever
نَهَاكُمْnahākum
he forbids you
عَنْهُʿanhu
from it,
فَانْتَهُواfa-intahū
refrain.
وَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqū
And fear
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
شَدِيدُshadīdu
(is) severe
الْعِقَابِl-ʿiqābi
(in) penalty.
Whatever gains God has turned over to His Messenger from the inhabitants of the villages belong to God, the Messenger, kinsfolk, orphans, the needy, the traveller in need- this is so that they do not just circulate among those of you who are rich––so accept whatever the Messenger gives you, and abstain from whatever he forbids you. Be mindful of God: God is severe in punishment.

لِلْفُقَرَاءِlil'fuqarāi
For the poor
الْمُهَاجِرِينَl-muhājirīna
emigrants,
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
أُخْرِجُواukh'rijū
were expelled
مِنْmin
from
دِيَارِهِمْdiyārihim
their homes
وَأَمْوَالِهِمْwa-amwālihim
and their properties,
يَبْتَغُونَyabtaghūna
seeking
فَضْلًاfaḍlan
bounty
مِنَmina
from Allah
اللَّهِl-lahi
from Allah
وَرِضْوَانًاwariḍ'wānan
and pleasure
وَيَنْصُرُونَwayanṣurūna
and helping
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُwarasūlahu
and His Messenger.
أُولَئِكَulāika
Those,
هُمُhumu
they
الصَّادِقُونَl-ṣādiqūna
(are) the truthful.
The poor emigrants who were driven from their homes and possessions, who seek God’s favour and approval, those who help God and His Messenger- these are the ones who are true- [shall have a share].
9
وَالَّذِينَwa-alladhīna
And those who
تَبَوَّءُوtabawwaū
settled
الدَّارَl-dāra
(in) the home
وَالْإِيمَانَwal-īmāna
and (accepted) faith
مِنْmin
before them
قَبْلِهِمْqablihim
before them
يُحِبُّونَyuḥibbūna
love
مَنْman
(those) who
هَاجَرَhājara
emigrated
إِلَيْهِمْilayhim
to them,
وَلَاwalā
and not
يَجِدُونَyajidūna
they find
فِيfī
in
صُدُورِهِمْṣudūrihim
their breasts
حَاجَةًḥājatan
any want
مِمَّاmimmā
of what
أُوتُواūtū
they were given
وَيُؤْثِرُونَwayu'thirūna
but prefer
عَلَىʿalā
over
أَنْفُسِهِمْanfusihim
themselves,
وَلَوْwalaw
even though
كَانَkāna
was
بِهِمْbihim
with them
خَصَاصَةٌkhaṣāṣatun
poverty.
وَمَنْwaman
And whoever
يُوقَyūqa
is saved
شُحَّshuḥḥa
(from) stinginess
نَفْسِهِnafsihi
(of) his soul,
فَأُولَئِكَfa-ulāika
then those
هُمُhumu
[they]
الْمُفْلِحُونَl-muf'liḥūna
(are) the successful ones.
Those who were already firmly established in their homes [in Medina], and firmly rooted in faith, show love for those who migrated to them for refuge and harbour no desire in their hearts for what has been given to them. They give them preference over themselves, even if they too are poor: those who are saved from their own souls’ greed are truly successful.
10
وَالَّذِينَwa-alladhīna
And those who
جَاءُوjāū
came
مِنْmin
after them
بَعْدِهِمْbaʿdihim
after them
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūna
they say,
رَبَّنَاrabbanā
"Our Lord,
اغْفِرْigh'fir
forgive
لَنَاlanā
us
وَلِإِخْوَانِنَاwali-ikh'wāninā
and our brothers
الَّذِينَalladhīna
who
سَبَقُونَاsabaqūnā
preceded us
بِالْإِيمَانِbil-īmāni
in faith,
وَلَاwalā
and (do) not
تَجْعَلْtajʿal
put
فِيfī
in
قُلُوبِنَاqulūbinā
our hearts
غِلًّاghillan
any rancor
لِلَّذِينَlilladhīna
towards those who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believed.
رَبَّنَاrabbanā
Our Lord,
إِنَّكَinnaka
indeed You
رَءُوفٌraūfun
(are) Full of Kindness,
رَحِيمٌraḥīmun
Most Merciful."
Those who came after them say, ‘Lord, forgive us our sins and the sins of our brothers who believed before us, and leave no malice in our hearts towards those who believe. Lord, You are truly compassionate and merciful.’
