Al-An'am

الْحَمْدُal-ḥamdu

(All) the praises and thanks

لِلَّهِlillahi

(be) to Allah,

الَّذِيalladhī

the One Who

خَلَقَkhalaqa

created

السَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwāti

the heavens

وَالْأَرْضَwal-arḍa

and the earth

وَجَعَلَwajaʿala

and made

الظُّلُمَاتِl-ẓulumāti

the darkness[es]

وَالنُّورَwal-nūra

and the light.

ثُمَّthumma

Then

الَّذِينَalladhīna

those who

كَفَرُواkafarū

disbelieved

بِرَبِّهِمْbirabbihim

in their Lord

يَعْدِلُونَyaʿdilūna

equate others with Him.

Praise belongs to God who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light; yet the disbelievers set up equals to their Lord!

هُوَhuwa

الَّذِيalladhī

(is) the One Who

خَلَقَكُمْkhalaqakum

created you

مِنْmin

from

طِينٍṭīnin

clay

ثُمَّthumma

then

قَضَىqaḍā

He decreed

أَجَلًاajalan

a term -

وَأَجَلٌwa-ajalun

and a term

مُسَمًّىmusamman

specified

عِنْدَهُʿindahu

with Him,

ثُمَّthumma

yet

أَنْتُمْantum

you

تَمْتَرُونَtamtarūna

doubt.

He is the one who created you from clay and specified a term [for you] and another fixed time, known only to Him; yet still you doubt!

وَهُوَwahuwa

And He

اللَّهُl-lahu

(is) Allah

فِيfī

السَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwāti

the heavens

وَفِيwafī

and in

الْأَرْضِl-arḍi

the earth.

يَعْلَمُyaʿlamu

He knows

سِرَّكُمْsirrakum

your secret

وَجَهْرَكُمْwajahrakum

and what you make public

وَيَعْلَمُwayaʿlamu

and He knows

مَاmā

what

تَكْسِبُونَtaksibūna

you earn.

He is God in the heavens and on earth, He knows your secrets and what you reveal, and He knows what you do;

وَمَاwamā

And not

تَأْتِيهِمْtatīhim

comes to them

مِنْmin

[of]

ءَايَةٍāyatin

any sign

مِنْmin

from

ءَايَاتِāyāti

(the) Signs

رَبِّهِمْrabbihim

(of) their Lord

إِلَّاillā

but

كَانُواkānū

they are

عَنْهَاʿanhā

from it

مُعْرِضِينَmuʿ'riḍīna

turning away.

but every time revelation comes to them from their Lord, they turn their backs on it.

فَقَدْfaqad

Then indeed,

كَذَّبُواkadhabū

they denied

بِالْحَقِّbil-ḥaqi

the truth

لَمَّاlammā

when

جَاءَهُمْjāahum

it came to them,

فَسَوْفَfasawfa

but soon

يَأْتِيهِمْyatīhim

will come to them

أَنبَؤُاanbāu

news

مَاmā

(of) what

كَانُواkānū

they used to

بِهِbihi

[at it]

يَسْتَهْزِءُونَyastahziūna

mock.

So they denied the truth when it came to them, but the very thing they laughed at will be brought home to them.

أَلَمْalam

Did not

يَرَوْاyaraw

they see

كَمْkam

how many

أَهْلَكْنَاahlaknā

We destroyed

مِنْmin

before them

قَبْلِهِمْqablihim

before them

مِنْmin

of generations

قَرْنٍqarnin

of generations

مَكَّنَّاهُمْmakkannāhum

We had established them

فِيfī

الْأَرْضِl-arḍi

the earth

مَاmā

what

لَمْlam

We (have) not established

نُمَكِّنْnumakkin

We (have) not established

لَكُمْlakum

for you?

وَأَرْسَلْنَاwa-arsalnā

And We sent

السَّمَاءَl-samāa

(rain from) the sky

عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim

upon them

مِدْرَارًاmid'rāran

showering abundantly

وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnā

and We made

الْأَنْهَارَl-anhāra

the rivers

تَجْرِيtajrī

flow

مِنْmin

underneath them.

تَحْتِهِمْtaḥtihim

underneath them.

فَأَهْلَكْنَاهُمْfa-ahlaknāhum

Then We destroyed them

بِذُنُوبِهِمْbidhunūbihim

for their sins

وَأَنْشَأْنَاwa-anshanā

and We raised

مِنْmin

after them

بَعْدِهِمْbaʿdihim

after them

قَرْنًاqarnan

other generations.

ءَاخَرِينَākharīna

other generations.

Do they not realize how many generations We destroyed before them? We established them in the earth more firmly than you, sent down abundant rain on them from the sky and made running rivers flow at their feet, yet We destroyed them for their misdeeds and raised other generations after them.

وَلَوْwalaw

And (even) if

نَزَّلْنَاnazzalnā

We (had) sent down

عَلَيْكَʿalayka

to you

كِتَابًاkitāban

a written Scripture

فِيfī

قِرْطَاسٍqir'ṭāsin

a parchment

فَلَمَسُوهُfalamasūhu

and they touched it

بِأَيْدِيهِمْbi-aydīhim

with their hands,

لَقَالَlaqāla

surely (would) have said

الَّذِينَalladhīna

those who

كَفَرُواkafarū

disbelieved,

إِنْin

"This is not

هَذَاhādhā

"This is not

إِلَّاillā

but

سِحْرٌsiḥ'run

clear magic."

مُبِينٌmubīnun

clear magic."

Even if We had sent down to you [Prophet] a book inscribed on parchment, and they had touched it with their own hands, the disbelievers would still say, ‘This is nothing but blatant sorcery.’

وَقَالُواwaqālū

And they said,

لَوْلَاlawlā

"Why has not been

أُنْزِلَunzila

sent down

عَلَيْهِʿalayhi

to him

مَلَكٌmalakun

an Angel?"

وَلَوْwalaw

And if

أَنْزَلْنَاanzalnā

We (had) sent down

مَلَكًاmalakan

an Angel,

لَقُضِيَlaquḍiya

surely (would) have been decided

الْأَمْرُl-amru

the matter

ثُمَّthumma

then

لَاlā

يُنْظَرُونَyunẓarūna

respite would have been

They say, ‘Why was no angel sent down to [support] him?’ But had We sent down an angel, their judgement would have come at once with no respite given.

وَلَوْwalaw

And if

جَعَلْنَاهُjaʿalnāhu

We had made him

مَلَكًاmalakan

an Angel,

لَجَعَلْنَاهُlajaʿalnāhu

certainly We (would) have made him

رَجُلًاrajulan

a man,

وَلَلَبَسْنَاwalalabasnā

and certainly We (would) have obscured

عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim

to them

مَاmā

what

يَلْبِسُونَyalbisūna

they are obscuring.

Indeed, if We had sent an angel as messenger, We would still have sent him in the form of a man, so increasing their confusion.

وَلَقَدِwalaqadi

And indeed

اسْتُهْزِئَus'tuh'zi-a

were mocked

بِرُسُلٍbirusulin

Messengers

مِنْmin

before you

قَبْلِكَqablika

before you

فَحَاقَfaḥāqa

but surrounded

بِالَّذِينَbi-alladhīna

those who

سَخِرُواsakhirū

scoffed

مِنْهُمْmin'hum

of them

مَاmā

what

كَانُواkānū

they used to

بِهِbihi

[at it]

يَسْتَهْزِءُونَyastahziūna

mock.

Messengers have been mocked before you [Muhammad], and those who mocked them were engulfed by the very punishment they had mocked.
