يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O you who believe!
الَّذِينَalladhīna
O you who believe!
ءَامَنُواāmanū
O you who believe!
لَاlā
(Do) not
تَتَّخِذُواtattakhidhū
take
عَدُوِّيʿaduwwī
My enemies
وَعَدُوَّكُمْwaʿaduwwakum
and your enemies
أَوْلِيَاءَawliyāa
(as) allies
تُلْقُونَtul'qūna
offering
إِلَيْهِمْilayhim
them
بِالْمَوَدَّةِbil-mawadati
love
وَقَدْwaqad
while
كَفَرُواkafarū
they have disbelieved
بِمَاbimā
in what
جَاءَكُمْjāakum
came to you
مِنَmina
of
الْحَقِّl-ḥaqi
the truth,
يُخْرِجُونَyukh'rijūna
driving out
الرَّسُولَl-rasūla
the Messenger
وَإِيَّاكُمْwa-iyyākum
and yourselves
أَنْan
because
تُؤْمِنُواtu'minū
you believe
بِاللَّهِbil-lahi
in Allah,
رَبِّكُمْrabbikum
your Lord.
إِنْin
If
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you
خَرَجْتُمْkharajtum
come forth
جِهَادًاjihādan
(to) strive
فِيfī
in
سَبِيلِيsabīlī
My way
وَابْتِغَاءَwa-ib'tighāa
and (to) seek
مَرْضَاتِيmarḍātī
My Pleasure.
تُسِرُّونَtusirrūna
You confide
إِلَيْهِمْilayhim
to them
بِالْمَوَدَّةِbil-mawadati
love,
وَأَنَاwa-anā
but I Am
أَعْلَمُaʿlamu
most knowing
بِمَاbimā
of what
أَخْفَيْتُمْakhfaytum
you conceal
وَمَاwamā
and what
أَعْلَنْتُمْaʿlantum
you declare.
وَمَنْwaman
And whoever
يَفْعَلْهُyafʿalhu
does it
مِنْكُمْminkum
among you
فَقَدْfaqad
then certainly
ضَلَّḍalla
he has strayed
سَوَاءَsawāa
(from the) straight
السَّبِيلِl-sabīli
path.
You who believe, do not take My enemies and yours as your allies, showing them friendship when they have rejected the truth you have received, and have driven you and the Messenger out simply because you believe in God, your Lord––not if you truly emigrated in order to strive for My cause and seek My good pleasure. You secretly show them friendship––I know all you conceal and all you reveal–– but any of you who do this are straying from the right path.

إِنْin
If
يَثْقَفُوكُمْyathqafūkum
they gain dominance over you,
يَكُونُواyakūnū
they would be
لَكُمْlakum
to you
أَعْدَاءًaʿdāan
enemies
وَيَبْسُطُواwayabsuṭū
and extend
إِلَيْكُمْilaykum
against you
أَيْدِيَهُمْaydiyahum
their hands
وَأَلْسِنَتَهُمْwa-alsinatahum
and their tongues
بِالسُّوءِbil-sūi
with evil,
وَوَدُّواwawaddū
and they desire
لَوْlaw
that
تَكْفُرُونَtakfurūna
you would disbelieve.
If they gain the upper hand over you, they will revert to being your enemies and stretch out their hands and tongues to harm you; it is their dearest wish that you may renounce your faith.
3
لَنْlan
Never
تَنْفَعَكُمْtanfaʿakum
will benefit you
أَرْحَامُكُمْarḥāmukum
your relatives
وَلَاwalā
and not
أَوْلَادُكُمْawlādukum
your children
يَوْمَyawma
(on the) Day
الْقِيَامَةِl-qiyāmati
(of) the Resurrection.
يَفْصِلُyafṣilu
He will judge
بَيْنَكُمْbaynakum
between you.
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
بِمَاbimā
of what
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūna
you do
بَصِيرٌbaṣīrun
(is) All-Seer.
Neither your kinsfolk nor your children will be any use to you on the Day of Resurrection: He will separate you out. God sees everything you do.
4
قَدْqad
Indeed,
كَانَتْkānat
(there) is
لَكُمْlakum
for you
أُسْوَةٌus'watun
an example
حَسَنَةٌḥasanatun

and those

when
قَالُواqālū
they said
لِقَوْمِهِمْliqawmihim
to their people,
إِنَّاinnā
"Indeed, we
بُرَءَاؤُاburaāu

from you
وَمِمَّاwamimmā
and from what

مِنْmin

دُونِdūni

اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah.
كَفَرْنَاkafarnā
We have denied

بَيْنَنَاbaynanā
between us
وَبَيْنَكُمُwabaynakumu
and between you
الْعَدَاوَةُl-ʿadāwatu
enmity
وَالْبَغْضَاءُwal-baghḍāu
and hatred
أَبَدًاabadan
forever
حَتَّىḥattā
until
تُؤْمِنُواtu'minū
you believe
بِاللَّهِbil-lahi
in Allah
وَحْدَهُwaḥdahu
Alone."
إِلَّاillā
Except
قَوْلَqawla
(the) saying
إِبْرَاهِيمَib'rāhīma
(of) Ibrahim
لِأَبِيهِli-abīhi
to his father,
لَأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّla-astaghfiranna
"Surely I ask forgiveness
لَكَlaka
for you,
وَمَاwamā
but not
أَمْلِكُamliku

اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
مِنْmin
of

anything.
رَبَّنَاrabbanā
Our Lord,
عَلَيْكَʿalayka
upon You
تَوَكَّلْنَاtawakkalnā
we put our trust,
وَإِلَيْكَwa-ilayka
and to You
أَنَبْنَاanabnā
we turn,
وَإِلَيْكَwa-ilayka
and to You
الْمَصِيرُl-maṣīru
(is) the final return.
You have a good example in Abraham and his companions, when they said to their people, ‘We disown you and what you worship besides God! We renounce you! Until you believe in God alone, the enmity and hatred that has arisen between us will endure!’––except when Abraham said to his father, ‘I will pray for forgiveness for you though I cannot protect you from God’––[they prayed] ‘Lord, we have put our trust in You; we turn to You; You are our final destination.

رَبَّنَاrabbanā
Our Lord,
لَاlā
(do) not
تَجْعَلْنَاtajʿalnā
make us
فِتْنَةًfit'natan
a trial
لِلَّذِينَlilladhīna
for those who
كَفَرُواkafarū
disbelieve,
وَاغْفِرْwa-igh'fir
and forgive
لَنَاlanā
us,
رَبَّنَاrabbanā
our Lord.
إِنَّكَinnaka
Indeed You
أَنْتَanta
[You]
الْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzu
(are) the All-Mighty,
الْحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmu
the All-Wise."
Lord, do not expose us to mistreatment [at the hands of] the disbelievers. Forgive us, Lord, for You are the Almighty, the All Wise.’
6
لَقَدْlaqad
Certainly,
كَانَkāna
(there) is
لَكُمْlakum
for you
فِيهِمْfīhim
in them
أُسْوَةٌus'watun
an example
حَسَنَةٌḥasanatun
good
لِمَنْliman
for (he) who
كَانَkāna
is hopeful
يَرْجُواyarjū
is hopeful
اللَّهَl-laha
(in) Allah
وَالْيَوْمَwal-yawma
and the Day
الْءَاخِرَl-ākhira
the Last.
وَمَنْwaman
And whoever
يَتَوَلَّyatawalla
turns away,
فَإِنَّfa-inna
then indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah,
هُوَhuwa
He,
الْغَنِيُّl-ghaniyu
(is) Free of need,
الْحَمِيدُl-ḥamīdu
the Praiseworthy.
Truly, they are a good example for you [believers] to follow, a good example for those who fear God and the Last Day. If anyone turns away, [remember] God is self-sufficing and worthy of all praise.

عَسَىʿasā
Perhaps
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah
أَنْan
[that]
يَجْعَلَyajʿala
will put
بَيْنَكُمْbaynakum
between you
وَبَيْنَwabayna
and between
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those (to) whom
عَادَيْتُمْʿādaytum
you have been enemies,
مِنْهُمْmin'hum
among them
مَوَدَّةًmawaddatan
love.
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
قَدِيرٌqadīrun
(is) All-Powerful.
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
غَفُورٌghafūrun
(is) Oft-Forgiving,
رَحِيمٌraḥīmun
Most Merciful.
God may still bring about affection between you and your present enemies- God is all powerful, God is most forgiving and merciful-

لَاlā
Allah (does) not forbid you
يَنْهَاكُمُyanhākumu
Allah (does) not forbid you
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah (does) not forbid you
عَنِʿani
from
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
لَمْlam
(do) not
يُقَاتِلُوكُمْyuqātilūkum
fight you
فِيfī
in
الدِّينِl-dīni
the religion
وَلَمْwalam
and (do) not
يُخْرِجُوكُمْyukh'rijūkum
drive you out
مِنْmin
of

أَنْan
that
تَبَرُّوهُمْtabarrūhum
you deal kindly
وَتُقْسِطُواwatuq'siṭū
and deal justly
إِلَيْهِمْilayhim
with them.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
يُحِبُّyuḥibbu
loves
الْمُقْسِطِينَl-muq'siṭīna
those who act justly.
and He does not forbid you to deal kindly and justly with anyone who has not fought you for your faith or driven you out of your homes: God loves the just.
9
إِنَّمَاinnamā
Only
يَنْهَاكُمُyanhākumu
Allah forbids you
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah forbids you
عَنِʿani
from
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those who
قَاتَلُوكُمْqātalūkum
fight you
فِيfī
in
الدِّينِl-dīni
the religion
وَأَخْرَجُوكُمْwa-akhrajūkum
and drive you out
مِنْmin
of
دِيَارِكُمْdiyārikum
your homes
وَظَاهَرُواwaẓāharū
and support
عَلَىʿalā
in
إِخْرَاجِكُمْikh'rājikum
your expulsion,
أَنْan
that
تَوَلَّوْهُمْtawallawhum
you make them allies.
وَمَنْwaman
And whoever
يَتَوَلَّهُمْyatawallahum
makes them allies,
فَأُولَئِكَfa-ulāika
then those
هُمُhumu
[they]
الظَّالِمُونَl-ẓālimūna
(are) the wrongdoers.
But God forbids you to take as allies those who have fought against you for your faith, driven you out of your homes, and helped others to drive you out: any of you who take them as allies will truly be wrongdoers.

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā

the believing women

you know them
مُؤْمِنَاتٍmu'minātin
(to be) believers,
فَلَاfalā
then (do) not
تَرْجِعُوهُنَّtarjiʿūhunna
return them
إِلَىilā
to
الْكُفَّارِl-kufāri
the disbelievers.
لَاlā
Not

are lawful
لَهُنَّlahunna
for them.
وَءَاتُوهُمْwaātūhum
But give them

جُنَاحَjunāḥa
any blame

وَسْءَلُواwasalū
but ask (for)
مَاmā
what
أَنْفَقْتُمْanfaqtum
you have spent,
وَلْيَسْءَلُواwalyasalū
and let them ask
مَاmā
what
أَنْفَقُواanfaqū
they have spent.
ذَلِكُمْdhālikum
That
حُكْمُḥuk'mu
(is the) Judgment
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah.
يَحْكُمُyaḥkumu
He judges
بَيْنَكُمْbaynakum
between you.
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
عَلِيمٌʿalīmun
(is) All-Knowing,
حَكِيمٌḥakīmun
All-Wise.
You who believe, test the believing women when they come to you as emigrants- God knows best about their faith- and if you are sure of their belief, do not send them back to the disbelievers: they are not lawful wives for them, nor are the disbelievers their lawful husbands. Give the disbelievers whatever bride-gifts they have paid- if you choose to marry them, there is no blame on you once you have paid their bride-gifts- and do not yourselves hold on to marriage ties with disbelieving women. Ask for repayment of the bride-gifts you have paid, and let the disbelievers do the same. This is God’s judgement: He judges between you, God is all knowing and wise.
