Surah Memorizer Beta

Al-Munafiqoon

1

إِذَاidhā
When
جَاءَكَjāaka
come to you
الْمُنَافِقُونَl-munāfiqūna
the hypocrites,
قَالُواqālū
they say,
نَشْهَدُnashhadu
"We testify
إِنَّكَinnaka
that you
لَرَسُولُlarasūlu
(are) surely (the) Messenger
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah."
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
يَعْلَمُyaʿlamu
knows
إِنَّكَinnaka
that you
لَرَسُولُهُlarasūluhu
(are) surely His Messenger,
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
and Allah
يَشْهَدُyashhadu
testifies
إِنَّinna
that
الْمُنَافِقِينَl-munāfiqīna
the hypocrites
لَكَاذِبُونَlakādhibūna
(are) surely liars.
When the hypocrites come to you [Prophet], they say, ‘We bear witness that you are the Messenger of God.’ God knows that you truly are His Messenger and He bears witness that the hypocrites are liars––

2

اتَّخَذُواittakhadhū
They take
أَيْمَانَهُمْaymānahum
their oaths
جُنَّةًjunnatan
(as) a cover,
فَصَدُّواfaṣaddū
so they turn away
عَنْʿan
from
سَبِيلِsabīli
(the) Way
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah.
إِنَّهُمْinnahum
Indeed, [they]
سَاءَsāa
evil is
مَا
what
كَانُواkānū
they used to
يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūna
do.
they use their oaths as a cover and so bar others from God’s way: what they have been doing is truly evil––

3

ذَلِكَdhālika
That
بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahum
(is) because
ءَامَنُواāmanū
they believed,
ثُمَّthumma
then
كَفَرُواkafarū
they disbelieved;
فَطُبِعَfaṭubiʿa
so were sealed
عَلَىʿalā
[upon]
قُلُوبِهِمْqulūbihim
their hearts,
فَهُمْfahum
so they
لَا
(do) not
يَفْقَهُونَyafqahūna
understand.
because they professed faith and then rejected it, so their hearts have been sealed and they do not understand.

4

وَإِذَاwa-idhā
And when
رَأَيْتَهُمْra-aytahum
you see them
تُعْجِبُكَtuʿ'jibuka
pleases you
أَجْسَامُهُمْajsāmuhum
their bodies,
وَإِنْwa-in
and if
يَقُولُواyaqūlū
they speak,
تَسْمَعْtasmaʿ
you listen
لِقَوْلِهِمْliqawlihim
to their speech,
كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahum
as if they (were)
خُشُبٌkhushubun
pieces of wood
مُسَنَّدَةٌmusannadatun
propped up.
يَحْسَبُونَyaḥsabūna
They think
كُلَّkulla
every
صَيْحَةٍṣayḥatin
shout
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim
(is) against them.
هُمُhumu
They
الْعَدُوُّl-ʿaduwu
(are) the enemy,
فَاحْذَرْهُمْfa-iḥ'dharhum
so beware of them.
قَاتَلَهُمُqātalahumu
May Allah destroy them!
اللَّهُl-lahu
May Allah destroy them!
أَنَّىannā
How
يُؤْفَكُونَyu'fakūna
are they deluded?
When you see them [Prophet], their outward appearance pleases you; when they speak, you listen to what they say. But they are like propped-up tim-bers––they think every cry they hear is against them––and they are the enemy. Beware of them. May God confound them! How devious they are!

5

وَإِذَاwa-idhā
And when
قِيلَqīla
it is said
لَهُمْlahum
to them,
تَعَالَوْاtaʿālaw
"Come,
يَسْتَغْفِرْyastaghfir
will ask forgiveness
لَكُمْlakum
for you
رَسُولُrasūlu
(the) Messenger of Allah."
اللَّهِl-lahi
(the) Messenger of Allah."
لَوَّوْاlawwaw
They turn aside
رُءُوسَهُمْruūsahum
their heads
وَرَأَيْتَهُمْwara-aytahum
and you see them
يَصُدُّونَyaṣuddūna
turning away
وَهُمْwahum
while they
مُسْتَكْبِرُونَmus'takbirūna
(are) arrogant.
They turn their heads away in disdain when they are told, ‘Come, so that the Messenger of God may ask forgiveness for you,’ and you see them walking away arrogantly.

6

سَوَاءٌsawāon
(It) is same
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim
for them
أَسْتَغْفَرْتَastaghfarta
whether you ask forgiveness
لَهُمْlahum
for them
أَمْam
or
لَمْlam
(do) not
تَسْتَغْفِرْtastaghfir
ask forgiveness
لَهُمْlahum
for them.
لَنْlan
Never
يَغْفِرَyaghfira
will Allah forgive
اللَّهُl-lahu
will Allah forgive
لَهُمْlahum
[to] them.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
لَا
(does) not
يَهْدِيyahdī
guide
الْقَوْمَl-qawma
the people,
الْفَاسِقِينَl-fāsiqīna
the defiantly disobedient.
It makes no difference whether you ask forgiveness for them or not, God will not forgive them: God does not guide such treacherous people.

7

هُمُhumu
They
الَّذِينَalladhīna
(are) those who
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūna
say,
لَا
"(Do) not
تُنْفِقُواtunfiqū
spend
عَلَىʿalā
on
مَنْman
(those) who
عِنْدَʿinda
(are) with
رَسُولِrasūli
(the) Messenger
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah
حَتَّىḥattā
until
يَنْفَضُّواyanfaḍḍū
they disband."
وَلِلَّهِwalillahi
And for Allah
خَزَائِنُkhazāinu
(are the) treasures
السَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwāti
(of) the heavens
وَالْأَرْضِwal-arḍi
and the earth,
وَلَكِنَّwalākinna
but
الْمُنَافِقِينَl-munāfiqīna
the hypocrites
لَا
(do) not
يَفْقَهُونَyafqahūna
understand.
They are the ones who say, ‘Give nothing to those who follow God’s Messenger, until they abandon him’, but to God belong the treasures of the heavens and earth, though the hypocrites do not understand this.

8

يَقُولُونَyaqūlūna
They say,
لَئِنْla-in
"If
رَجَعْنَاrajaʿnā
we return
إِلَىilā
to
الْمَدِينَةِl-madīnati
Al-Madinah,
لَيُخْرِجَنَّlayukh'rijanna
surely, will expel
الْأَعَزُّl-aʿazu
the more honorable
مِنْهَاmin'hā
from it
الْأَذَلَّl-adhala
the more humble."
وَلِلَّهِwalillahi
But for Allah
الْعِزَّةُl-ʿizatu
(is) the honor
وَلِرَسُولِهِwalirasūlihi
and for His Messenger
وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَwalil'mu'minīna
and for the believers,
وَلَكِنَّwalākinna
but
الْمُنَافِقِينَl-munāfiqīna
the hypocrites
لَا
(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna
know.
They say, ‘Once we return to Medina the powerful will drive out the weak,’ but power belongs to God, to His Messenger, and to the believers, though the hypocrites do not know this.

9

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O you who believe!
الَّذِينَalladhīna
O you who believe!
ءَامَنُواāmanū
O you who believe!
لَا
(Let) not
تُلْهِكُمْtul'hikum
divert you
أَمْوَالُكُمْamwālukum
your wealth
وَلَاwalā
and not
أَوْلَادُكُمْawlādukum
your children
عَنْʿan
from
ذِكْرِdhik'ri
(the) remembrance
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah.
وَمَنْwaman
And whoever
يَفْعَلْyafʿal
does
ذَلِكَdhālika
that,
فَأُولَئِكَfa-ulāika
then those
هُمُhumu
[they]
الْخَاسِرُونَl-khāsirūna
(are) the losers.
Believers, do not let your wealth and your children distract you from remembering God: those who do so will be the ones who lose.

10

وَأَنْفِقُواwa-anfiqū
And spend
مِنْmin
from
مَا
what
رَزَقْنَاكُمْrazaqnākum
We have provided you
مِنْmin
before
قَبْلِqabli
before
أَنْan
[that]
يَأْتِيَyatiya
comes
أَحَدَكُمُaḥadakumu
(to) one of you
الْمَوْتُl-mawtu
the death
فَيَقُولَfayaqūla
and he says,
رَبِّrabbi
"My Lord!
لَوْلَاlawlā
Why not
أَخَّرْتَنِيakhartanī
You delay me
إِلَىilā
for
أَجَلٍajalin
a term
قَرِيبٍqarībin
near
فَأَصَّدَّقَfa-aṣṣaddaqa
so I would give charity
وَأَكُنْwa-akun
and be
مِنَmina
among
الصَّالِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīna
the righteous."
Give out of what We have provided for you, before death comes to one of you and he says, ‘My Lord, if You would only reprieve me for a little while, I would give in charity and become one of the righteous.’
