يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā

O Prophet!

النَّبِيُّl-nabiyu

O Prophet!

إِذَاidhā

When

طَلَّقْتُمُṭallaqtumu

you divorce

النِّسَاءَl-nisāa

[the] women,

فَطَلِّقُوهُنَّfaṭalliqūhunna

then divorce them

لِعِدَّتِهِنَّliʿiddatihinna

for their waiting period,

وَأَحْصُواwa-aḥṣū

and keep count

الْعِدَّةَl-ʿidata

(of) the waiting period,

وَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqū

and fear

اللَّهَl-laha

Allah,

رَبَّكُمْrabbakum

your Lord.

لَاlā

(Do) not

تُخْرِجُوهُنَّtukh'rijūhunna

expel them

مِنْmin

from

بُيُوتِهِنَّbuyūtihinna

their houses,

وَلَاwalā

and not

يَخْرُجْنَyakhruj'na

they should leave

إِلَّاillā

except

أَنْan

that

يَأْتِينَyatīna

they commit

بِفَاحِشَةٍbifāḥishatin

an immorality

مُبَيِّنَةٍmubayyinatin

clear.

وَتِلْكَwatil'ka

And these

حُدُودُḥudūdu

(are the) limits

اللَّهِl-lahi

(of) Allah.

وَمَنْwaman

And whoever

يَتَعَدَّyataʿadda

transgresses

حُدُودَḥudūda

(the) limits

اللَّهِl-lahi

(of) Allah

فَقَدْfaqad

then certainly

ظَلَمَẓalama

he has wronged

نَفْسَهُnafsahu

himself.

لَاlā

Not

تَدْرِيtadrī

you know;

لَعَلَّlaʿalla

Perhaps

اللَّهَl-laha

Allah

يُحْدِثُyuḥ'dithu

will bring about,

بَعْدَbaʿda

after

ذَلِكَdhālika

that,

أَمْرًاamran

a matter.

Prophet, when any of you intend to divorce women, do so at a time when their prescribed waiting period can properly start, and calculate the period carefully: be mindful of God, your Lord. Do not drive them out of their homes––nor should they themselves leave––unless they commit a flagrant indecency. These are the limits set by God–– whoever oversteps God’s limits wrongs his own soul––for you cannot know what new situation God may perhaps bring about.

فَإِذَاfa-idhā

Then when

بَلَغْنَbalaghna

they have reached

أَجَلَهُنَّajalahunna

their term,

فَأَمْسِكُوهُنَّfa-amsikūhunna

then retain them

بِمَعْرُوفٍbimaʿrūfin

with kindness

أَوْaw

فَارِقُوهُنَّfāriqūhunna

part with them

بِمَعْرُوفٍbimaʿrūfin

with kindness.

وَأَشْهِدُواwa-ashhidū

And take witness

ذَوَيْdhaway

two men

عَدْلٍʿadlin

just

مِنْكُمْminkum

among you

وَأَقِيمُواwa-aqīmū

and establish

الشَّهَادَةَl-shahādata

the testimony

لِلَّهِlillahi

for Allah.

ذَلِكُمْdhālikum

That

يُوعَظُyūʿaẓu

is instructed,

بِهِbihi

with it,

مَنْman

whoever

كَانَkāna

[is]

يُؤْمِنُyu'minu

believes

بِاللَّهِbil-lahi

in Allah

وَالْيَوْمِwal-yawmi

and the Day

الْءَاخِرِl-ākhiri

the Last.

وَمَنْwaman

And whoever

يَتَّقِyattaqi

fears Allah,

اللَّهَl-laha

fears Allah,

يَجْعَلْyajʿal

He will make

لَهُlahu

for him

مَخْرَجًاmakhrajan

a way out,

When they have completed their appointed term, either keep them honourably, or part with them honourably. Call two just witnesses from your people and establish witness for the sake of God. Anyone who believes in God and the Last Day should heed this: God will find a way out for those who are mindful of Him,

وَيَرْزُقْهُwayarzuq'hu

And He will provide for him

مِنْmin

from

حَيْثُḥaythu

where

لَاlā

not

يَحْتَسِبُyaḥtasibu

he thinks.

وَمَنْwaman

And whoever

يَتَوَكَّلْyatawakkal

puts his

عَلَىʿalā

upon

اللَّهِl-lahi

Allah,

فَهُوَfahuwa

then He

حَسْبُهُḥasbuhu

(is) sufficient for him.

إِنَّinna

Indeed,

اللَّهَl-laha

Allah

بَالِغُbālighu

(will) accomplish

أَمْرِهِamrihi

His purpose.

قَدْqad

Indeed,

جَعَلَjaʿala

Allah has set

اللَّهُl-lahu

Allah has set

لِكُلِّlikulli

for every

شَيْءٍshayin

thing

قَدْرًاqadran

a measure.

and will provide for them from an unexpected source; God will be enough for those who put their trust in Him. God achieves His purpose; God has set a due measure for everything.

وَاللَّائِيwa-allāī

And those who

يَئِسْنَya-is'na

have despaired

مِنَmina

الْمَحِيضِl-maḥīḍi

the menstruation

مِنْmin

among

نِسَائِكُمْnisāikum

your women,

إِنِini

ارْتَبْتُمْir'tabtum

you doubt,

فَعِدَّتُهُنَّfaʿiddatuhunna

then their waiting period

ثَلَاثَةُthalāthatu

(is) three

أَشْهُرٍashhurin

months,

وَاللَّائِيwa-allāī

and the ones who

لَمْlam

not

يَحِضْنَyaḥiḍ'na

[they] menstruated.

وَأُولَاتُwa-ulātu

And those who (are) pregnant,

الْأَحْمَالِl-aḥmāli

And those who (are) pregnant,

أَجَلُهُنَّajaluhunna

their term

أَنْan

until

يَضَعْنَyaḍaʿna

they deliver

حَمْلَهُنَّḥamlahunna

their burdens.

وَمَنْwaman

And whoever

يَتَّقِyattaqi

fears

اللَّهَl-laha

Allah,

يَجْعَلْyajʿal

He will make

لَهُlahu

for him

مِنْmin

أَمْرِهِamrihi

his affair

يُسْرًاyus'ran

ease.

If you are in doubt, the period of waiting will be three months for those women who have ceased menstruating and for those who have not [yet] menstruated; the waiting period of those who are pregnant will be until they deliver their burden: God makes things easy for those who are mindful of Him.

ذَلِكَdhālika

That

أَمْرُamru

(is the) Command of Allah,

اللَّهِl-lahi

(is the) Command of Allah,

أَنْزَلَهُanzalahu

which He has sent down

إِلَيْكُمْilaykum

to you;

وَمَنْwaman

and whoever

يَتَّقِyattaqi

fears Allah,

اللَّهَl-laha

fears Allah,

يُكَفِّرْyukaffir

He will remove

عَنْهُʿanhu

from

سَيِّئَاتِهِsayyiātihi

his evil deeds

وَيُعْظِمْwayuʿ'ẓim

and make great

لَهُlahu

for him

أَجْرًاajran

(his) reward.

This is God’s command, which He has sent down to you. God will wipe out the sinful deeds and increase the rewards of anyone who is mindful of Him.

أَسْكِنُوهُنَّaskinūhunna

Lodge them

مِنْmin

[from] where

حَيْثُḥaythu

[from] where

سَكَنْتُمْsakantum

you dwell,

مِنْmin

(out) of

وُجْدِكُمْwuj'dikum

your means

وَلَاwalā

and (do) not

تُضَارُّوهُنَّtuḍārrūhunna

harm them

لِتُضَيِّقُواlituḍayyiqū

to distress

عَلَيْهِنَّʿalayhinna

[on] them.

وَإِنْwa-in

And if

كُنَّkunna

they are

أُولَاتِulāti

pregnant,

حَمْلٍḥamlin

pregnant,

فَأَنْفِقُواfa-anfiqū

then spend

عَلَيْهِنَّʿalayhinna

on them

حَتَّىḥattā

until

يَضَعْنَyaḍaʿna

they deliver

حَمْلَهُنَّḥamlahunna

their burden.

فَإِنْfa-in

Then if

أَرْضَعْنَarḍaʿna

they suckle

لَكُمْlakum

for you,

فَءَاتُوهُنَّfaātūhunna

then give them

أُجُورَهُنَّujūrahunna

their payment,

وَأْتَمِرُواwatamirū

and consult

بَيْنَكُمْbaynakum

among yourselves

بِمَعْرُوفٍbimaʿrūfin

with kindness,

وَإِنْwa-in

but if

تَعَاسَرْتُمْtaʿāsartum

you disagree,

فَسَتُرْضِعُfasatur'ḍiʿu

then may suckle

لَهُlahu

for him

أُخْرَىukh'rā

another (women).

House the wives you are divorcing according to your means, wherever you house yourselves, and do not harass them so as to make their lives difficult. If they are pregnant, maintain them until they are delivered of their burdens; if they suckle your infants, pay them for it. Consult together in a good way- if you make difficulties for one another, another woman may suckle the child for the father––

لِيُنْفِقْliyunfiq

Let spend

ذُوdhū

owner of ample means

سَعَةٍsaʿatin

owner of ample means

مِنْmin

from

سَعَتِهِsaʿatihi

his ample means,

وَمَنْwaman

and (he) who,

قُدِرَqudira

is restricted

عَلَيْهِʿalayhi

on him

رِزْقُهُriz'quhu

his provision,

فَلْيُنْفِقْfalyunfiq

let him spend

مِمَّاmimmā

from what

ءَاتَاهُātāhu

Allah has given him.

اللَّهُl-lahu

Allah has given him.

لَاlā

Allah does not burden

يُكَلِّفُyukallifu

Allah does not burden

اللَّهُl-lahu

Allah does not burden

نَفْسًاnafsan

any soul

إِلَّاillā

except

مَاmā

(with) what

ءَاتَاهَاātāhā

He has given it.

سَيَجْعَلُsayajʿalu

Allah will bring about

اللَّهُl-lahu

Allah will bring about

بَعْدَbaʿda

after

عُسْرٍʿus'rin

hardship

يُسْرًاyus'ran

ease.

and let the wealthy man spend according to his wealth. But let him whose provision is restricted spend according to what God has given him: God does not burden any soul with more than He has given it- after hardship, God will bring ease.

وَكَأَيِّنْwaka-ayyin

And how many

مِنْmin

قَرْيَةٍqaryatin

a town

عَتَتْʿatat

rebelled

عَنْʿan

against

أَمْرِamri

(the) Command

رَبِّهَاrabbihā

(of) its Lord

وَرُسُلِهِwarusulihi

and His Messengers,

فَحَاسَبْنَاهَاfaḥāsabnāhā

so We took it to account,

حِسَابًاḥisāban

an account

شَدِيدًاshadīdan

severe;

وَعَذَّبْنَاهَاwaʿadhabnāhā

and We punished it,

عَذَابًاʿadhāban

a punishment

نُكْرًاnuk'ran

terrible.

Many a town that insolently opposed the command of its Lord and His messengers We have brought sternly to account: We punished them severely

فَذَاقَتْfadhāqat

So it tasted

وَبَالَwabāla

(the bad) consequence

أَمْرِهَاamrihā

(of) its affair,

وَكَانَwakāna

and was

عَاقِبَةُʿāqibatu

(the) end

أَمْرِهَاamrihā

(of) its affair

خُسْرًاkhus'ran

loss.

to make them taste the ill effect of their conduct- the result of their conduct was ruin.

أَعَدَّaʿadda

Allah has prepared

اللَّهُl-lahu

Allah has prepared

لَهُمْlahum

for them

عَذَابًاʿadhāban

a punishment

شَدِيدًاshadīdan

severe.

فَاتَّقُواfa-ittaqū

So fear Allah,

اللَّهَl-laha

So fear Allah,

يَاأُولِيyāulī

O men of understanding,

الْأَلْبَابِl-albābi

O men of understanding,

الَّذِينَalladhīna

those who

ءَامَنُواāmanū

have believed!

قَدْqad

Indeed,

أَنْزَلَanzala

Allah has sent down

اللَّهُl-lahu

Allah has sent down

إِلَيْكُمْilaykum

to you

ذِكْرًاdhik'ran

a Message.

God has prepared a severe torment for them. So, you who have understanding, you who believe, beware of God. He has sent you the Quran
