Surah Memorizer Beta

At-Tahrim

1

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O Prophet!
النَّبِيُّl-nabiyu
O Prophet!
لِمَlima
Why (do)
تُحَرِّمُtuḥarrimu
you prohibit
مَا
what
أَحَلَّaḥalla
Allah has made lawful
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah has made lawful
لَكَlaka
for you,
تَبْتَغِيtabtaghī
seeking
مَرْضَاتَmarḍāta
(to) please
أَزْوَاجِكَazwājika
your wives?
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
غَفُورٌghafūrun
(is) Oft-Forgiving,
رَحِيمٌraḥīmun
Most Merciful.
Prophet, why do you prohibit what God has made lawful to you in your desire to please your wives? Yet God is forgiving and merciful:

2

قَدْqad
Indeed,
فَرَضَfaraḍa
Allah has ordained
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah has ordained
لَكُمْlakum
for you
تَحِلَّةَtaḥillata
(the) dissolution
أَيْمَانِكُمْaymānikum
(of) your oaths.
وَاللَّهُwal-lahu
And Allah
مَوْلَاكُمْmawlākum
(is) your Protector
وَهُوَwahuwa
and He
الْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmu
(is) the All-Knower,
الْحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmu
the All-Wise.
He has ordained a way for you [believers] to release you from [such] oaths––God is your helper: He is the All Knowing, the Wise.

3

وَإِذْwa-idh
And when
أَسَرَّasarra
confided
النَّبِيُّl-nabiyu
the Prophet
إِلَىilā
to
بَعْضِbaʿḍi
one
أَزْوَاجِهِazwājihi
(of) his wives
حَدِيثًاḥadīthan
a statement,
فَلَمَّاfalammā
and when
نَبَّأَتْnabba-at
she informed
بِهِbihi
about it
وَأَظْهَرَهُwa-aẓharahu
and Allah made it apparent
اللَّهُl-lahu
and Allah made it apparent
عَلَيْهِʿalayhi
to him,
عَرَّفَʿarrafa
he made known
بَعْضَهُbaʿḍahu
a part of it
وَأَعْرَضَwa-aʿraḍa
and avoided
عَنْʿan
[of]
بَعْضٍbaʿḍin
a part.
فَلَمَّاfalammā
Then when
نَبَّأَهَاnabba-ahā
he informed her
بِهِbihi
about it,
قَالَتْqālat
she said,
مَنْman
"Who
أَنْبَأَكَanba-aka
informed you
هَذَاhādhā
this?"
قَالَqāla
He said,
نَبَّأَنِيَnabba-aniya
"Has informed me
الْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmu
the All-Knower,
الْخَبِيرُl-khabīru
the All-Aware."
The Prophet told something in confidence to one of his wives. When she disclosed it [to another wife] and God made this known to him, he confirmed part of it, keeping the rest to himself. When he confronted her with what she had done, she asked, ‘Who told you about this?’ and he replied, ‘The All Knowing, the All Aware told me.’

4

إِنْin
If
تَتُوبَاtatūbā
you both turn
إِلَىilā
to
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah,
فَقَدْfaqad
so indeed,
صَغَتْṣaghat
(are) inclined
قُلُوبُكُمَاqulūbukumā
your hearts;
وَإِنْwa-in
but if
تَظَاهَرَاtaẓāharā
you backup each other
عَلَيْهِʿalayhi
against him,
فَإِنَّfa-inna
then indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah,
هُوَhuwa
He
مَوْلَاهُmawlāhu
(is) his Protector,
وَجِبْرِيلُwajib'rīlu
and Jibreel,
وَصَالِحُwaṣāliḥu
and (the) righteous
الْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīna
believers,
وَالْمَلَائِكَةُwal-malāikatu
and the Angels,
بَعْدَbaʿda
after
ذَلِكَdhālika
that
ظَهِيرٌẓahīrun
(are his) assistants.
If both of you [wives] repent to God––for your hearts have deviated––[all will be well]; if you collaborate against him, [be warned that] God will aid him, as will Gabriel and all righteous believers, and the angels too will back him.

5

عَسَىʿasā
Perhaps
رَبُّهُrabbuhu
his Lord,
إِنْin
if
طَلَّقَكُنَّṭallaqakunna
he divorced you,
أَنْan
[that]
يُبْدِلَهُyub'dilahu
He will substitute for him
أَزْوَاجًاazwājan
wives
خَيْرًاkhayran
better
مِنْكُنَّminkunna
than you
مُسْلِمَاتٍmus'limātin
submissive,
مُؤْمِنَاتٍmu'minātin
faithful,
قَانِتَاتٍqānitātin
obedient,
تَائِبَاتٍtāibātin
repentant,
عَابِدَاتٍʿābidātin
who worship,
سَائِحَاتٍsāiḥātin
who fast,
ثَيِّبَاتٍthayyibātin
previously married
وَأَبْكَارًاwa-abkāran
and virgins.
His Lord may well replace you with better wives if the Prophet decides to divorce any of you: wives who are devoted to God, true believers, devout, who turn to Him in repentance and worship Him, given to fasting, whether previously married or virgins.

6

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O you who believe!
الَّذِينَalladhīna
O you who believe!
ءَامَنُواāmanū
O you who believe!
قُوا
Protect
أَنْفُسَكُمْanfusakum
yourselves
وَأَهْلِيكُمْwa-ahlīkum
and your families
نَارًاnāran
(from) a Fire
وَقُودُهَاwaqūduhā
whose fuel
النَّاسُl-nāsu
(is) people
وَالْحِجَارَةُwal-ḥijāratu
and stones,
عَلَيْهَاʿalayhā
over it
مَلَائِكَةٌmalāikatun
(are) Angels
غِلَاظٌghilāẓun
stern,
شِدَادٌshidādun
severe;
لَا
not
يَعْصُونَyaʿṣūna
they disobey
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
مَا
(in) what
أَمَرَهُمْamarahum
He Commands them
وَيَفْعَلُونَwayafʿalūna
but they do
مَا
what
يُؤْمَرُونَyu'marūna
they are commanded.
Believers, guard yourselves and your families against a Fire fuelled by people and stones, over which stand angels, stern and strong; angels who never disobey God’s commands to them, but do as they are ordered:

7

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
"O you who disbelieve!
الَّذِينَalladhīna
"O you who disbelieve!
كَفَرُواkafarū
"O you who disbelieve!
لَا
(Do) not
تَعْتَذِرُواtaʿtadhirū
make excuses
الْيَوْمَl-yawma
today.
إِنَّمَاinnamā
Only
تُجْزَوْنَtuj'zawna
you will be recompensed
مَا
(for) what
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you used to
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūna
do."
‘You who disbelieve, make no excuses today: you are only being repaid for what you used to do.’

8

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O you who believe!
الَّذِينَalladhīna
O you who believe!
ءَامَنُواāmanū
O you who believe!
تُوبُواtūbū
Turn
إِلَىilā
to
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
تَوْبَةًtawbatan
(in) repentance
نَصُوحًاnaṣūḥan
sincere!
عَسَىʿasā
Perhaps
رَبُّكُمْrabbukum
your Lord
أَنْan
[that]
يُكَفِّرَyukaffira
will remove
عَنْكُمْʿankum
from you
سَيِّئَاتِكُمْsayyiātikum
your evil deeds
وَيُدْخِلَكُمْwayud'khilakum
and admit you
جَنَّاتٍjannātin
(into) Gardens
تَجْرِيtajrī
flow
مِنْmin
from
تَحْتِهَاtaḥtihā
underneath it
الْأَنْهَارُl-anhāru
the rivers,
يَوْمَyawma
(on the) Day
لَا
not
يُخْزِيyukh'zī
Allah will disgrace
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah will disgrace
النَّبِيَّl-nabiya
the Prophet
وَالَّذِينَwa-alladhīna
and those who
ءَامَنُواāmanū
believed
مَعَهُmaʿahu
with him.
نُورُهُمْnūruhum
Their light
يَسْعَىyasʿā
will run
بَيْنَbayna
before them
أَيْدِيهِمْaydīhim
before them
وَبِأَيْمَانِهِمْwabi-aymānihim
and on their right;
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūna
they will say,
رَبَّنَاrabbanā
"Our Lord
أَتْمِمْatmim
Perfect
لَنَاlanā
for us
نُورَنَاnūranā
our light
وَاغْفِرْwa-igh'fir
and grant forgiveness
لَنَاlanā
to us.
إِنَّكَinnaka
Indeed, You
عَلَىʿalā
(are) over
كُلِّkulli
every
شَيْءٍshayin
thing
قَدِيرٌqadīrun
All-Powerful."
Believers, turn to God in sincere repentance. Your Lord may well cancel your bad deeds for you and admit you into Gardens graced with flowing streams, on a Day when God will not disgrace the Prophet or those who have believed with him. With their lights streaming out ahead of them and to their right, they will say, ‘Lord, perfect our lights for us and forgive us: You have power over everything.’

9

يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhā
O Prophet!
النَّبِيُّl-nabiyu
O Prophet!
جَاهِدِjāhidi
Strive
الْكُفَّارَl-kufāra
(against) the disbelievers
وَالْمُنَافِقِينَwal-munāfiqīna
and the hypocrites,
وَاغْلُظْwa-ugh'luẓ
and be stern
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim
with them.
وَمَأْوَاهُمْwamawāhum
And their abode
جَهَنَّمُjahannamu
(is) Hell,
وَبِئْسَwabi'sa
and wretched is
الْمَصِيرُl-maṣīru
the destination.
Prophet, strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Deal with them sternly. Hell will be their home, an evil destination!

ضَرَبَḍaraba
Allah presents
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah presents
مَثَلًاmathalan
an example
لِلَّذِينَlilladhīna
for those who
كَفَرُواkafarū
disbelieved -
امْرَأَتَim'ra-ata
(the) wife
نُوحٍnūḥin
(of) Nuh
وَامْرَأَتَwa-im'ra-ata
(and the) wife
لُوطٍlūṭin
(of) Lut.
كَانَتَاkānatā
They were
تَحْتَtaḥta
under
عَبْدَيْنِʿabdayni
two [slaves]
مِنْmin
of
عِبَادِنَاʿibādinā
Our slaves
صَالِحَيْنِṣāliḥayni
righteous,
فَخَانَتَاهُمَاfakhānatāhumā
but they both betrayed them,
فَلَمْfalam
so not
يُغْنِيَاyugh'niyā
they availed,
عَنْهُمَاʿanhumā
both of them,
مِنَmina
from
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
شَيْئًاshayan
(in) anything,
وَقِيلَwaqīla
and it was said,
ادْخُلَاud'khulā
"Enter
النَّارَl-nāra
the Fire
مَعَmaʿa
with
الدَّاخِلِينَl-dākhilīna
those who enter."
God has given examples of disbelievers: the wives of Noah and Lot who married two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them. Their husbands could not help them against God: it was said, ‘Both of you enter the Fire with the others.’
