will make you know

الْحَاقَّةُl-ḥāqatu
(is) the Inevitable Reality?
What will explain to you what the Inevitable Hour is?

كَذَّبَتْkadhabat
Denied
ثَمُودُthamūdu
Thamud
وَعَادٌwaʿādun
and Aad
بِالْقَارِعَةِbil-qāriʿati
the Striking Calamity.
The people of Thamud and 'Ad denied that the crashing blowwould come:

فَأَمَّاfa-ammā
So as for
ثَمُودُthamūdu
Thamud,
فَأُهْلِكُواfa-uh'likū
they were destroyed
بِالطَّاغِيَةِbil-ṭāghiyati
by the overpowering (blast).
Thamud was destroyed by a deafening blast;

وَأَمَّاwa-ammā
And as for
عَادٌʿādun
Aad,
فَأُهْلِكُواfa-uh'likū
they were destroyed
بِرِيحٍbirīḥin
by a wind
صَرْصَرٍṣarṣarin
screaming
عَاتِيَةٍʿātiyatin
violent,
Ad was destroyed by a furious wind

سَخَّرَهَاsakharahā
Which He imposed
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim
upon them
سَبْعَsabʿa
(for) seven
لَيَالٍlayālin
nights
وَثَمَانِيَةَwathamāniyata
and eight
أَيَّامٍayyāmin
days
حُسُومًاḥusūman
(in) succession,
فَتَرَىfatarā
so you would see
الْقَوْمَl-qawma
the people
فِيهَاfīhā
therein
صَرْعَىṣarʿā
fallen
كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahum
as if they were
أَعْجَازُaʿjāzu
trunks
نَخْلٍnakhlin
(of) date-palms
خَاوِيَةٍkhāwiyatin
hollow.
that God let loose against them for seven consecutive nights, eight consecutive days, so that you could have seen its people lying dead like hollow palm-trunks.

فَهَلْfahal
Then do
تَرَىtarā
you see
لَهُمْlahum
of them
مِنْmin
any
بَاقِيَةٍbāqiyatin
remains?
Can you see any trace of them now?
9
وَجَاءَwajāa
And came
فِرْعَوْنُfir'ʿawnu
Firaun,
وَمَنْwaman
and (those)
قَبْلَهُqablahu
before him,
وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَاتُwal-mu'tafikātu
and the overturned cities
بِالْخَاطِئَةِbil-khāṭi-ati
with sin.
And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities with sin.

فَعَصَوْاfaʿaṣaw
And they disobeyed
رَسُولَrasūla
(the) Messenger
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim
(of) their Lord,
فَأَخَذَهُمْfa-akhadhahum
so He seized them
أَخْذَةًakhdhatan
(with) a seizure
رَابِيَةًrābiyatan
exceeding.
these people committed grave sins and disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with an ever-tightening grip.
