Surah Memorizer Beta

Al-Jinn

1

قُلْqul
Say,
أُوحِيَūḥiya
"It has been
إِلَيَّilayya
to me
أَنَّهُannahu
that
اسْتَمَعَis'tamaʿa
listened
نَفَرٌnafarun
a group
مِنَmina
of
الْجِنِّl-jini
the jinn,
فَقَالُواfaqālū
and they said,
إِنَّاinnā
"Indeed, we
سَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nā
heard
قُرْءَانًاqur'ānan
a Quran
عَجَبًاʿajaban
amazing,
Say [Prophet], ‘It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn once listened in and said, “We have heard a wondrous Quran,

2

يَهْدِيyahdī
It guides
إِلَىilā
to
الرُّشْدِl-rush'di
the right way,
فَءَامَنَّاfaāmannā
so we believe
بِهِbihi
in it,
وَلَنْwalan
and never
نُشْرِكَnush'rika
we will associate
بِرَبِّنَاbirabbinā
with our Lord
أَحَدًاaḥadan
anyone.
that gives guidance to the right path, and we have come to believe it––We shall never set up partners with our Lord––

3

وَأَنَّهُwa-annahu
And that He -
تَعَالَىtaʿālā
Exalted is
جَدُّjaddu
(the) Majesty
رَبِّنَاrabbinā
(of) our Lord -
مَا
not
اتَّخَذَittakhadha
He has taken
صَاحِبَةًṣāḥibatan
a wife
وَلَاwalā
and not
وَلَدًاwaladan
a son,
and that He––exalted be the glory of our Lord!––has neither spouse nor child.

4

وَأَنَّهُwa-annahu
And that he
كَانَkāna
used to
يَقُولُyaqūlu
speak -
سَفِيهُنَاsafīhunā
the foolish among us
عَلَىʿalā
against
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
شَطَطًاshaṭaṭan
an excessive transgression.
Outrageous things have been said about God by the foolish among us,

5

وَأَنَّاwa-annā
And that we
ظَنَنَّاẓanannā
thought
أَنْan
that
لَنْlan
never
تَقُولَtaqūla
will say
الْإِنْسُl-insu
the men
وَالْجِنُّwal-jinu
and the jinn,
عَلَىʿalā
against
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
كَذِبًاkadhiban
any lie.
although we had thought that no man or jinn would [dare to] tell a lie about Him.

6

وَأَنَّهُwa-annahu
And that
كَانَkāna
(there) were
رِجَالٌrijālun
men
مِنَmina
among
الْإِنْسِl-insi
mankind
يَعُوذُونَyaʿūdhūna
who sought refuge
بِرِجَالٍbirijālin
in (the) men
مِنَmina
from
الْجِنِّl-jini
the jinn,
فَزَادُوهُمْfazādūhum
so they increased them
رَهَقًاrahaqan
(in) burden.
Men have sought refuge with the jinn in the past, but they only misguided them further.

7

وَأَنَّهُمْwa-annahum
And that they
ظَنُّواẓannū
thought
كَمَاkamā
as
ظَنَنْتُمْẓanantum
you thought
أَنْan
that
لَنْlan
never
يَبْعَثَyabʿatha
will raise
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah
أَحَدًاaḥadan
anyone.
They thought, as you did, that God would never raise anyone from the dead.

8

وَأَنَّاwa-annā
And that we
لَمَسْنَاlamasnā
sought to touch
السَّمَاءَl-samāa
the heaven
فَوَجَدْنَاهَاfawajadnāhā
but we found it
مُلِئَتْmuli-at
filled (with)
حَرَسًاḥarasan
guards
شَدِيدًاshadīdan
severe,
وَشُهُبًاwashuhuban
and flaming fires.
We tried to reach heaven, but discovered it to be full of stern guards and shooting stars––

9

وَأَنَّاwa-annā
And that we
كُنَّاkunnā
used to
نَقْعُدُnaqʿudu
sit
مِنْهَاmin'hā
there in
مَقَاعِدَmaqāʿida
positions
لِلسَّمْعِlilssamʿi
for hearing,
فَمَنْfaman
but (he) who
يَسْتَمِعِyastamiʿi
listens
الْءَانَl-āna
now
يَجِدْyajid
will find
لَهُlahu
for him
شِهَابًاshihāban
a flaming fire
رَصَدًاraṣadan
waiting.
we used to sit in places there, listening, but anyone trying to listen now will find a shooting star lying in wait for him––

10

وَأَنَّاwa-annā
And that we -
لَا
not
نَدْرِيnadrī
we know
أَشَرٌّasharrun
whether evil
أُرِيدَurīda
is intended
بِمَنْbiman
for (those) who
فِي
(are) in
الْأَرْضِl-arḍi
the earth
أَمْam
or
أَرَادَarāda
intends
بِهِمْbihim
for them
رَبُّهُمْrabbuhum
their Lord
رَشَدًاrashadan
a right path.
[so now] we do not know whether those who live on earth are due for misfortune, or whether their Lord intends to guide them.
