Was there not a period of time when man was nothing to speak of ?

2

إِنَّاinnā
Indeed, We
خَلَقْنَاkhalaqnā
[We] created
الْإِنْسَانَl-insāna
man
مِنْmin
from
نُطْفَةٍnuṭ'fatin
a semen-drop,
أَمْشَاجٍamshājin
a mixture,

(that) We test him;
فَجَعَلْنَاهُfajaʿalnāhu
so
سَمِيعًاsamīʿan
hearing
بَصِيرًاbaṣīran

We created man from a drop of mingled fluid to put him to the test; We gave him hearing and sight;

Indeed, We
هَدَيْنَاهُhadaynāhu
guided him
السَّبِيلَl-sabīla
(to) the way
إِمَّاimmā
whether
شَاكِرًاshākiran
(he) be grateful
وَإِمَّاwa-immā
and whether
كَفُورًاkafūran
(he) be ungrateful.
We guided him to the right path, whether he was grateful or not.

إِنَّاinnā
Indeed, We
أَعْتَدْنَاaʿtadnā
[We] have prepared
لِلْكَافِرِينَlil'kāfirīna
for the disbelievers
سَلَاسِلَاsalāsilā
chains
وَأَغْلَالًاwa-aghlālan
and shackles
وَسَعِيرًاwasaʿīran

We have prepared chains, iron collars, and blazing Fire for the disbelievers, but

6

عَيْنًاʿaynan
A spring -
يَشْرَبُyashrabu
will drink
بِهَاbihā
from it
عِبَادُʿibādu
(the) slaves
اللَّهِl-lahi
(of) Allah;
يُفَجِّرُونَهَاyufajjirūnahā
causing it to gush forth
تَفْجِيرًاtafjīran
abundantly.
a spring for God’s servants, which flows abundantly at their wish.

7

يُوفُونَyūfūna

بِالنَّذْرِbil-nadhri
the vows

(which) is
شَرُّهُsharruhu
its evil
مُسْتَطِيرًاmus'taṭīran
widespread.
They fulfil their vows; they fear a day of widespread woes;

8

وَيُطْعِمُونَwayuṭ'ʿimūna
And they feed
الطَّعَامَl-ṭaʿāma
the food
عَلَىʿalā
in spite of
حُبِّهِḥubbihi
love (for) it,
مِسْكِينًاmis'kīnan
(to the) needy,
وَيَتِيمًاwayatīman
and (the) orphan
وَأَسِيرًاwa-asīran
and (the) captive,
they give food to the poor, the orphan, and the captive, though they love it themselves,

9

إِنَّمَاinnamā
"Only
نُطْعِمُكُمْnuṭ'ʿimukum
we feed you
لِوَجْهِliwajhi
for (the) Countenance

we desire
مِنْكُمْminkum
from you
جَزَاءًjazāan
any reward

and not
شُكُورًاshukūran
thanks.
saying, ‘We feed you for the sake of God alone: We seek neither recompense nor thanks from you.

10

إِنَّاinnā
Indeed, we
نَخَافُnakhāfu
fear
مِنْmin
from
رَبِّنَاrabbinā
our Lord
يَوْمًاyawman
a Day -

harsh
قَمْطَرِيرًاqamṭarīran

We fear the Day of our Lord––a woefully grim Day.’
