Al-Anfal
1
يَسْءَلُونَكَyasalūnaka
They ask you
عَنِʿani
about
الْأَنْفَالِl-anfāli
the spoils of war.
قُلِquli
Say,
الْأَنْفَالُl-anfālu
"The spoils of war
لِلَّهِlillahi
(are) for Allah
وَالرَّسُولِwal-rasūli
and the Messenger.
فَاتَّقُواfa-ittaqū
So fear
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
وَأَصْلِحُواwa-aṣliḥū
and set right
ذَاتَdhāta
that
بَيْنِكُمْbaynikum
(which is) between you
وَأَطِيعُواwa-aṭīʿū
and obey Allah
اللَّهَl-laha
and obey Allah
وَرَسُولَهُwarasūlahu
and His Messenger,
إِنْin
if
كُنْتُمْkuntum
you are
مُؤْمِنِينَmu'minīna
believers."
They ask you [Prophet] about [distributing] the battle gains. Say, ‘That is a matter for God and His Messenger, so be mindful of God and make things right between you. Obey God and His Messenger if you are true believers:

إِنَّمَاinnamā
Only
الْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūna
the believers
الَّذِينَalladhīna
(are) those who
إِذَاidhā
when
ذُكِرَdhukira
Allah is mentioned
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah is mentioned
وَجِلَتْwajilat
feel fear
قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhum
their hearts,
وَإِذَاwa-idhā
and when
تُلِيَتْtuliyat
are recited
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim
to them
ءَايَاتُهُāyātuhu
His Verses,
زَادَتْهُمْzādathum
they increase them
إِيمَانًاīmānan
(in) faith,
وَعَلَىwaʿalā
and upon
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim
their Lord
يَتَوَكَّلُونَyatawakkalūna
they put their trust.
true believers are those whose hearts tremble with awe when God is mentioned, whose faith increases when His revelations are recited to them, who put their trust in their Lord,

الَّذِينَalladhīna
Those who
يُقِيمُونَyuqīmūna
establish
الصَّلَوةَl-ṣalata
the prayer
وَمِمَّاwamimmā
and out of what
رَزَقْنَاهُمْrazaqnāhum
We have provided them
يُنْفِقُونَyunfiqūna
they spend.
who keep up the prayer and give to others out of what We provide for them.

أُولَئِكَulāika
Those -
هُمُhumu
they are
الْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūna
the believers
حَقًّاḥaqqan
(in) truth.
لَهُمْlahum
For them
دَرَجَاتٌdarajātun
(are) ranks
عِنْدَʿinda
with
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim
their Lord
وَمَغْفِرَةٌwamaghfiratun
and forgiveness
وَرِزْقٌwariz'qun
and a provision
كَرِيمٌkarīmun
noble.
Those are the ones who truly believe. They have high standing with their Lord, forgiveness, and generous provision.’

كَمَاkamā
As
أَخْرَجَكَakhrajaka
brought you out
رَبُّكَrabbuka
your Lord
مِنْmin
from your home
بَيْتِكَbaytika
from your home
بِالْحَقِّbil-ḥaqi
in truth,
وَإِنَّwa-inna
while indeed,
فَرِيقًاfarīqan
a party
مِنَmina
among
الْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīna
the believers
لَكَارِهُونَlakārihūna
certainly disliked.
For it was your Lord who made you [Prophet] venture from your home for a true purpose––though a group of the believers disliked it

يُجَادِلُونَكَyujādilūnaka
They dispute with you
فِيfī
concerning
الْحَقِّl-ḥaqi
the truth
بَعْدَbaʿdamā
after what
مَاmā
what
تَبَيَّنَtabayyana
was made clear,
كَأَنَّمَاka-annamā
as if
يُسَاقُونَyusāqūna
they were driven
إِلَىilā
to
الْمَوْتِl-mawti
[the] death
وَهُمْwahum
while they
يَنْظُرُونَyanẓurūna
(were) looking.
and argued with you about the truth after it had been made clear, as if they were being driven towards a death they could see with their own eyes.
7
وَإِذْwa-idh
And when
يَعِدُكُمُyaʿidukumu
Allah promised you
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah promised you
إِحْدَىiḥ'dā
one
الطَّائِفَتَيْنِl-ṭāifatayni
(of) the two groups -
أَنَّهَاannahā
that it (would be)
لَكُمْlakum
for you -
وَتَوَدُّونَwatawaddūna
and you wished
أَنَّanna
that
غَيْرَghayra
(one) other than
ذَاتِdhāti
the armed
الشَّوْكَةِl-shawkati
the armed
تَكُونُtakūnu
would be
لَكُمْlakum
for you.
وَيُرِيدُwayurīdu
But Allah intended
اللَّهُl-lahu
But Allah intended
أَنْan
to justify
يُحِقَّyuḥiqqa
to justify
الْحَقَّl-ḥaqa
the truth
بِكَلِمَاتِهِbikalimātihi
by His words,
وَيَقْطَعَwayaqṭaʿa
and cut off
دَابِرَdābira
(the) roots
الْكَافِرِينَl-kāfirīna
(of) the disbelievers
Remember how God promised you [believers] that one of the two enemy groups would fall to you: you wanted the unarmed group to be yours, but it was God’s will to establish the truth according to His Word and to finish off the disbelievers––

لِيُحِقَّliyuḥiqqa
That He might justify
الْحَقَّl-ḥaqa
the truth
وَيُبْطِلَwayub'ṭila
and prove false
الْبَاطِلَl-bāṭila
the falsehood,
وَلَوْwalaw
even if
كَرِهَkariha
disliked (it)
الْمُجْرِمُونَl-muj'rimūna
the criminals.
to prove the Truth to be true, and the false to be false, much as the guilty might dislike it.
9
إِذْidh
When
تَسْتَغِيثُونَtastaghīthūna
you were seeking help
رَبَّكُمْrabbakum
(of) your Lord
فَاسْتَجَابَfa-is'tajāba
and He answered
لَكُمْlakum
[to] you,
أَنِّيannī
"Indeed, I am
مُمِدُّكُمْmumiddukum
going to reinforce you
بِأَلْفٍbi-alfin
with a thousand
مِنَmina
of
الْمَلَائِكَةِl-malāikati
the Angels
مُرْدِفِينَmur'difīna
one after another."
When you begged your Lord for help, He answered you, ‘I will reinforce you with a thousand angels in succession.’
10
وَمَاwamā
And not
جَعَلَهُjaʿalahu
Allah made it
اللَّهُl-lahu
Allah made it
إِلَّاillā
but
بُشْرَىbush'rā
good tidings
وَلِتَطْمَئِنَّwalitaṭma-inna
and so that might be at rest
بِهِbihi
with it
قُلُوبُكُمْqulūbukum
your hearts.
وَمَاwamā
And (there is) no
النَّصْرُl-naṣru
[the] victory
إِلَّاillā
except
مِنْmin
from
عِنْدِʿindi
from
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
عَزِيزٌʿazīzun
(is) All-Mighty,
حَكِيمٌḥakīmun
All-Wise.
God made this a message of hope to reassure your hearts: help comes only from God, He is mighty and wise.
