Surah Memorizer Beta

At-Tawbah

1

بَرَاءَةٌbarāatun
Freedom from obligations
مِنَmina
from
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
وَرَسُولِهِwarasūlihi
and His Messenger
إِلَىilā
to
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those (with) whom
عَاهَدْتُمْʿāhadttum
you made a
مِنَmina
from
الْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīna
the polytheists.
A release by God and His Messenger from the treaty you [believers] made with the idolaters [is announced]––

2

فَسِيحُواfasīḥū
So move about
فِي
in
الْأَرْضِl-arḍi
the land
أَرْبَعَةَarbaʿata
(during) four
أَشْهُرٍashhurin
months
وَاعْلَمُواwa-iʿ'lamū
but know
أَنَّكُمْannakum
that you
غَيْرُghayru
(can) not
مُعْجِزِيmuʿ'jizī
escape
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
وَأَنَّwa-anna
and that
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
مُخْزِيmukh'zī
(is) the One Who (will) disgrace
الْكَافِرِينَl-kāfirīna
the disbelievers.
you [idolaters] may move freely about the land for four months, but you should bear in mind both that you will not escape God, and that God will disgrace those who defy [Him].

3

وَأَذَانٌwa-adhānun
And an announcement
مِنَmina
from Allah
اللَّهِl-lahi
from Allah
وَرَسُولِهِwarasūlihi
and His Messenger
إِلَىilā
to
النَّاسِl-nāsi
the people
يَوْمَyawma
(on the) day
الْحَجِّl-ḥaji
(of) the greater Pilgrimage
الْأَكْبَرِl-akbari
(of) the greater Pilgrimage
أَنَّanna
that
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
بَرِيءٌbarīon
(is) free from obligations
مِنَmina
[of]
الْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīna
(to) the polytheists,
وَرَسُولُهُwarasūluhu
and (so is) His Messenger.
فَإِنْfa-in
So if
تُبْتُمْtub'tum
you repent,
فَهُوَfahuwa
then, it is
خَيْرٌkhayrun
best
لَكُمْlakum
for you.
وَإِنْwa-in
But if
تَوَلَّيْتُمْtawallaytum
you turn away
فَاعْلَمُواfa-iʿ'lamū
then know
أَنَّكُمْannakum
that you
غَيْرُghayru
(can) not
مُعْجِزِيmuʿ'jizī
escape
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah.
وَبَشِّرِwabashiri
And give glad tidings
الَّذِينَalladhīna
(to) those who
كَفَرُواkafarū
disbelieve
بِعَذَابٍbiʿadhābin
of a punishment
أَلِيمٍalīmin
painful.
On the Day of the Great Pilgrimage [there will be] a proclamation from God and His Messenger to all people: ‘God and His Messenger are released from [treaty] obligations to the idolaters. It will be better for you [idolaters] if you repent; know that you cannot escape God if you turn away.’ [Prophet], warn those who ignore [God] that they will have a painful punishment.

4

إِلَّاillā
Except
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those (with) whom
عَاهَدْتُمْʿāhadttum
you have a
مِنَmina
among
الْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīna
the polytheists,
ثُمَّthumma
then
لَمْlam
not
يَنْقُصُوكُمْyanquṣūkum
they have failed you
شَيْئًاshayan
(in any) thing
وَلَمْwalam
and not
يُظَاهِرُواyuẓāhirū
they have supported
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
against you
أَحَدًاaḥadan
anyone,
فَأَتِمُّواfa-atimmū
so fulfil
إِلَيْهِمْilayhim
to them
عَهْدَهُمْʿahdahum
their treaty
إِلَىilā
till
مُدَّتِهِمْmuddatihim
their term.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
يُحِبُّyuḥibbu
loves
الْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīna
the righteous.
As for those who have honoured the treaty you made with them and who have not supported anyone against you: fulfil your agreement with them to the end of their term. God loves those who are mindful of Him.

5

فَإِذَاfa-idhā
Then when
انْسَلَخَinsalakha
have passed
الْأَشْهُرُl-ashhuru
the sacred months,
الْحُرُمُl-ḥurumu
the sacred months,
فَاقْتُلُواfa-uq'tulū
then kill
الْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīna
the polytheists
حَيْثُḥaythu
wherever
وَجَدْتُمُوهُمْwajadttumūhum
you find them
وَخُذُوهُمْwakhudhūhum
and seize them
وَاحْصُرُوهُمْwa-uḥ'ṣurūhum
and besiege them
وَاقْعُدُواwa-uq'ʿudū
and sit (in wait)
لَهُمْlahum
for them
كُلَّkulla
(at) every
مَرْصَدٍmarṣadin
place of ambush.
فَإِنْfa-in
But if
تَابُواtābū
they repent
وَأَقَامُواwa-aqāmū
and establish
الصَّلَوةَl-ṣalata
the prayer
وَءَاتَوُاwaātawū
and give
الزَّكَوةَl-zakata
the zakah
فَخَلُّواfakhallū
then leave
سَبِيلَهُمْsabīlahum
their way.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
غَفُورٌghafūrun
(is) Oft-Forgiving,
رَحِيمٌraḥīmun
Most Merciful.
When the [four] forbidden months are over, wherever you encounter the idolaters, kill them, seize them, besiege them, wait for them at every lookout post; but if they turn [to God], maintain the prayer, and pay the prescribed alms, let them go on their way, for God is most forgiving and merciful.

6

وَإِنْwa-in
And if
أَحَدٌaḥadun
anyone
مِنَmina
of
الْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīna
the polytheists
اسْتَجَارَكَis'tajāraka
seek your protection
فَأَجِرْهُfa-ajir'hu
then grant him protection
حَتَّىḥattā
until
يَسْمَعَyasmaʿa
he hears
كَلَامَkalāma
(the) Words of Allah.
اللَّهِl-lahi
(the) Words of Allah.
ثُمَّthumma
Then
أَبْلِغْهُabligh'hu
escort him
مَأْمَنَهُmamanahu
(to) his place of safety.
ذَلِكَdhālika
That
بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahum
(is) because they
قَوْمٌqawmun
(are) a people
لَا
(who) do not know.
يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna
(who) do not know.
If any one of the idolaters should seek your protection [Prophet], grant it to him so that he may hear the word of God, then take him to a place safe for him, for they are people with no knowledge [of it].

7

كَيْفَkayfa
How
يَكُونُyakūnu
can (there) be
لِلْمُشْرِكِينَlil'mush'rikīna
for the polytheists
عَهْدٌʿahdun
a covenant
عِنْدَʿinda
with
اللَّهِl-lahi
Allah
وَعِنْدَwaʿinda
and with
رَسُولِهِrasūlihi
His Messenger,
إِلَّاillā
except
الَّذِينَalladhīna
those (with) whom
عَاهَدْتُمْʿāhadttum
you made a
عِنْدَʿinda
near
الْمَسْجِدِl-masjidi
Al-Masjid Al-Haraam?
الْحَرَامِl-ḥarāmi
Al-Masjid Al-Haraam?
فَمَاfamā
So long as
اسْتَقَامُواis'taqāmū
they are upright
لَكُمْlakum
to you
فَاسْتَقِيمُواfa-is'taqīmū
then you be upright
لَهُمْlahum
to them.
إِنَّinna
Indeed,
اللَّهَl-laha
Allah
يُحِبُّyuḥibbu
loves
الْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīna
the righteous.
How could there be a treaty with God and His Messenger for such idolaters? But as for those with whom you made a treaty at the Sacred Mosque, so long as they remain true to you, be true to them; God loves those who are mindful of Him.

8

كَيْفَkayfa
How
وَإِنْwa-in
while, if
يَظْهَرُواyaẓharū
they gain dominance
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykum
over you
لَا
they do not regard (the ties)
يَرْقُبُواyarqubū
they do not regard (the ties)
فِيكُمْfīkum
with you
إِلًّاillan
(of) kinship
وَلَاwalā
and not
ذِمَّةًdhimmatan
covenant of protection?
يُرْضُونَكُمْyur'ḍūnakum
They satisfy you
بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْbi-afwāhihim
with their mouths
وَتَأْبَىwatabā
but refuse,
قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhum
their hearts
وَأَكْثَرُهُمْwa-aktharuhum
and most of them
فَاسِقُونَfāsiqūna
(are) defiantly disobedient.
[How,] when, if they were to get the upper hand over you, they would not respect any tie with you, of kinship or of treaty? They please you with their tongues, but their hearts are against you and most of them are lawbreakers.

9

اشْتَرَوْاish'taraw
They exchange
بِءَايَاتِbiāyāti
[with] the Verses of Allah
اللَّهِl-lahi
[with] the Verses of Allah
ثَمَنًاthamanan
(for) a little price,
قَلِيلًاqalīlan
(for) a little price,
فَصَدُّواfaṣaddū
and they hinder (people)
عَنْʿan
from
سَبِيلِهِsabīlihi
His way.
إِنَّهُمْinnahum
Indeed,
سَاءَsāa
evil
مَا
(is) what
كَانُواkānū
they used to
يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūna
do.
They have sold God’s message for a trifling gain, and barred others from His path. How evil their actions are!

10

لَا
Not
يَرْقُبُونَyarqubūna
they respect (the ties)
فِي
towards
مُؤْمِنٍmu'minin
a believer
إِلًّاillan
(of) kinship
وَلَاwalā
and not
ذِمَّةًdhimmatan
covenant of protection.
وَأُولَئِكَwa-ulāika
And those
هُمُhumu
[they]
الْمُعْتَدُونَl-muʿ'tadūna
(are) the transgressors.
Where believers are concerned, they respect no tie of kinship or treaty. They are the ones who are committing aggression.
